BMW 2007 328i (E90, E92) – Saved $300 – DIY Belt Tensioner Replacement by FRB

BMW 2007 E92 DIY Belt tensioner and belt replacement. Parts and tools, I spent about $200 doing this job and it took me about an hour to complete. Local dealer quoted me about $500 so I decided to Do It Myself.

very helpful! thank you!

I cannot for the life of me get that belt routed. It almost seems as though it's too short even though it can't possibly be since it came with the tensioner pulley as a kit. Am I doing something wrong? Seems as though I'd need another inch or two in order to get it on to the tensioner pulley once I route it around all the other pulleys

Elvis Levano says:

what kind of torque wrench do you have? brand model?

leon Eady Jr says:

Is this the correct Bavauto part#: ADK0022P

Thank you for the video. I have one question, the belt tensioner kit also supplied another wheel I think it's the idler pulley or something it's by
number two on that belt diagram you supplied, just below and to the right of the alternator. I assume it's not mandatory to replace this if the one on the car seems to be fine?

Thanks for a really well done, informative video. I do have a couple of questions. First, the tensioner bolt torqueing. Do I understand correctly that the bolt is to be tightened to 25NM and then the wrench is rotated a further 90 degrees? (rather than there being a simple end torque setting?) Also, is there a certain mileage at which the replacement is supposed to be done or is it a matter of inspecting the belt and tensioner condition? My wife's 2008 has only 75k and the belt looks and feels ok, but I think it would be wise to change them soon. I changed the tensioner, pulleys and belt on my 2000 e39 a few years ago and that was a real job – mainly because of the need to remove fan and radiator. The 328 job looks relatively easy thankfully.

Instant sub, I just purchased the same e92 a few days ago, if anything go s wrong I will be coming back here

Thanks for this — especially the individual tool break down. Very helpful.

sMUTHAFKINmoneybags says:

how long did it take you to complete the process

Marc Liyanage says:

This video is great, the procedure is very clearly explained, thanks! The image and sound are great, way better than other videos I've seen here. What camera and microphone did you use? Did you add the voice later?

J. Allen says:

Oh, and both the belt and tensioner should cost less than $150.. and actually closer to $75-110.

J. Allen says:

Quite well done friend. Thank you.  I have a 335i w/N54 and there are not really any videos out there so I'm using this as an example. Only a few differences.  Your video commentary, and especially the words edited into the frame are very helpful. Keep up the good work.

ltnsky says:

great video! can you please explain how to tell the belt tensioner needs to be replaced? what are the symptoms?

David Pion says:

Thank you for the video! BMW Dealer quote me $1300 for the job. I did it under 1 hour and changed the pulley. I was able to get a Digital Snap on tool and torque to 25NM(18.4) and 90 degree angle. Peace of cake, the Pulley is 40NM for anyone that needs the specs.

Michael Hardill says:

Thanks for the video! Do you happen to remember where the oil leak was coming from, was it by chance the oil filter housing?
