surelytempting says:

Hey pretty sure this poorly adjusted valves. Look into that…

boris kovac says:

Drain the oil and put thicket oil should do it. The oil is too thin and it
burns therefor the valves dont get lubricated enough

axegorrr says:

where is the noise coming from? i have a very similar problem

jaypo7 says:

I read the codes using my laptop and software like carsoft. Alternatively,
most local garages should be able to read the codes for you. This noise
seems to be very common among E46 owners. The lifters are definitely about
£100 for the set and I’m going to see a garage tomorrow for a labour cost.
Alternatively this could be an oil pressure problem but I’m done guessing
so i’m just going to get a price tomorrow and give it in asap.

MrBobbyDolow says:

@jaypo7 I have the very same thing with my 2000 E46 318CI Coupe. It’s
driving me nuts, did cleaning the spark plugs and turning over the engine
while they were out fix your problem? Also, any clues or would be very much
appreciated.

jaypo7 says:

@axegorrr : hey mate i appreciate the comment, i aim to check properly over
the weekend but it seems to come from the left hand side of the engine not
the right. But without checking further i couldn’t tell you if its coming
from quite low down in the engine bay or not. I have already changed the
DISA valve recently so i’m now thinking oil pump? tappets? other? you
mentioned your having a similar problem, what model/engine are you driving?
Its a horrible racket cant wait to sort it out.

Ice z says:

Hey, my e46 is doing the same thing! Can you give me the oem parts numbers
to the parts you bought? thanks

jaypo7 says:

FINAL UPDATE!!! Hi all – Just to let you know that this noise has
conclusively STOPPED!!! Finally!!! Happy Days!! The work took a day to
do… The bad tappit that came out had about 7mm play on it meaning that
you could pull it in and out with your fingers. You cannot do the same with
the new ones nor the other ones that came out. That’s where the noise comes
from. I left the car over night then started it in the morning with fingers
crossed…… No more ticking! 🙂 Job Done!

James Howard says:

same problem here tapping is loud on & off but mostley on driving me nuts
also have engine warning light on, 2000 316i e46

MrEightfourty says:

Any luck? Mines doing the same thing 🙁

jaypo7 says:

Hi mate, I suggest you use realoem.com to check for your car specifically.
Here’s what I have Gasket-11421709800, Value-11421432228,
O-Ring-11421709513. A friend of mine owns a car parts shop so he sold me
most of it. These are his numbers Filter-11421716192, Tappits-11331247054,
Rocker Cov Gasket-11121432885, Oil 10W40. I just had to tell him and the
BMW dealer my reg and model to ensure I was getting the right parts. Hope
this helps – Good Luck!

phillip stewart says:

hi pall did u finde the problem as i have same thing

jaypo7 says:

@MrBobbyDolow Hi Mate, I feel you – it drove me nuts for ages… There were
so many things it could have been so i started off simple/most
likely/cheapest fix. I took out the plugs cleaned them, then turned the
engine over to blow out the cylinders. I also checked to see if the heat
shield was loose or knocking anywhere. That was it – When i put it back
together the noise was gone for Good!!!! Normally, i prefer a definitive
answer but I was happy with that freebie… Hope this helps you mate.

Rudy5372 says:

its the VANOS, I posted a video also and will be replacing the Unit on
Saturday

jaypo7 says:

@galenrpowers Hi mate, heres an update: I checked the plugs as you
suggested but they looked very healthy… on one hand that’s good news but
it didn’t give me any clues as to the cause of the knocking… then the
luckiest thing happened. After giving the plugs a good clean/replacing them
and turning over the engine while they were out to blow out the
cylinders… KNOCKING GONE!! It has been a week now so i can only presume
it was a dodgy plug or the heat shield housing 🙂 happy days! Thanks!

617k122 says:

I am cleaning and took out all my spark plugs also turning it over with
them out, And then after i finished all of this i will see if the ticking
comes back or anything.. My tick is the same as this but i own a 328ci e46
and my tick is random so it comes and goes… I will reply and let you know
if the tick COMES back ! HOPE this fixes it ! !

jaypo7 says:

UPDATE! – Right I’ve finally booked the car into the garage for next
monday(12th). I have bought the following parts: Hydraulic Tappits Oil
filter + plus the O rings etc Oil Rocker Cover gasket Oil Filter case
Gasket Total £130.00 Hopefully come Tuesday the noise will be gone!

jaypo7 says:

@wrxanth Unfortunately not yet… still working on it haven’t had much time
due to work. I will post the results when I get there….

James Howard says:

Hmm intresting mine seems to start when the oil gets warm im so sure its
the same noise as this vid, how do you read the codes, or is there
something I have to buy. Cheers.

jaypo7 says:

After further investigation by a friend of mine who has exactly the same
problem/tick the solution was changing the lifters – Thats was it!
Sorted… total cost around £300. I haven’t done mine as yet but i will
post the result asap.

jaypo7 says:

@rosewine86 Hi Mate, as i mentioned below i havent sorted it out yet but im
on the case. I just took the car out for a drive and its definitely worse
in the cold and stays for longer until the car warms up. I will post any
progress…

jaypo7 says:

@wrxanth Hey Mate, just saw your video… thats horrible and exactly the
same as i’m getting and many other people for that matter. I haven’t solved
it YET! but I havent had the time to get out to look. I’ll keep you posted
and I’d appreciate you doing the same. I’ve been going through loads of
threads on BMW sites but I think i just need to get out there as see what I
can find myself. I might start this time with new oil and sparks. Have you
changed yours recently?

XpLoid nasa says:

Had same problem, its valve springs and rockets which holding that spring
is broken or mabe few of them like in my situation costly job , will hit
hard your pocket,…sorry

jaypo7 says:

Yes mate – as it happens i do and you’ve just reminded me to post the
result… Check back shortly! Cheers

eddie r says:

hi i have the same problem, do u now how to fix it

jaypo7 says:

Hi mate, the engine warning light could be a number of things… I normally
read the codes to get a fix or an idea of what’s wrong. Mine is still
ticking and getting worse… I just haven’t taken it in yet as i know
roughly what the bill will be. I don’t have any light on. I know its
definitely the lifters/tappets. Does yours stop once the car/oil is warm?

Galen Powers says:

This one does sound like a valve train issue to me, but I am no expert. If
you want to rule out the piston slap problem, read the spark plugs. If you
don’t find a black oily one, it is probably something else. If you find an
oily plug, a leak down test will confirm the problem is in that cylinder.
Good Luck.
