GREAT VIDEO ED 5 STARS,ive done alot of work on cars and i just learned
something i think is pretty important, that would save me from tearing the
front end apart.*****
Well I did the job on Monday, and everything went without a hitch. Your
pipe wrench advice was the key to the whole thing since I didn’t have the
special Audi tool for reaching down through the top to unscrew that
retainer collar. Turns out I didn’t need to remove the wheels, but I did
jack up the car a bit to widen the space in the spring in order to fit in
the pipe wrench. Thanks again for the video…DIY only cost me $112 for new
cartridges and bellows…My mechanic wanted $750!!!
The coil springs are fully extended. You just jack it up, take off the
tire, and turn the steering all the way to one side or the other to gain
the most access through the spring for the pipe wrench. Good Luck!
Thanks for the tip, I was stumped on the pipe wrench section. All going
well now. Like you said, next nickel and dime repair. I really enjoyed
replacing the ignition switch too. Guess I need to make a video of that if
you haven’t already. JB
This was a very hepful video. In my case I had to use alot of heat and a
sawsall to cut away some of the retainer ring before I could get it loose.
Once I got the ring off the rest was pretty simple. I uses 2 small bottle
jacksto line up the strut housing and the access opening. One under the
lower control arm and one on top of the tie rod end. I was able to adjust
the jacks independently to line up the housing and opening. This allowed
for a stright shot for the insert.
In my case there was a spacer that I had to install. The struts were more
of a universal set and the spacer was required. I also had to put 30ml of
oil in the strut tube too.
Im just curious, if anyone can answer this right where that collar went
there is a tube that goes down where the strut is, its about 3 or 4 inches
long, what is that called
I bought the special tool (2069A) for GBP21. I think there are two versions
of this tool – 28mm and 33mm. Make sure you get the right one! Some people
with welding skills have made their own.
Im wondering what is this part called? its a tube that the strut collar
fits over where the strut insert goes i have no idea what its called if
someone could let me know you’d be a big help thanks
Thanks for the excellent video. I’ll be replacing mine next week, but I
have one small question…Was the spring completely extended or compressed
to some extent somehow? I’m naturally leary of coil springs and your video
seems too good to be true! Thanks again.
I’m the idiot that continues to buy 90-94 Audi v8 quattro’s and I always
sell them when the suspension work starts flowing. I’ll now be doing mine
this week (exact same as your A6). The audi forums couldn’t have exhibited
this better. Cheers to you guys! Ever do the front wheel bearings or rear
suspension I’ll be watching. But have to tell ya when she needs a heater
core…she’s outa here! Chow!

I have a video on the ignition switch replacement. It’s not as bad as some
would have you believe. Thanks for watching JB!
You didn’t even have to use spring compressors?

That’s excellent! I’m glad this video helped. Thanks for the comment -Ed

@mundell2213 Thanks for the comment and the jack tip!

Thanks for the comment. I did the job with no special tools.

You don’t have to remove the springs at all.

Thanks! I hope it’s done for awhile, I’m tired of working on it!
