thank you helps good! If you take out the battery for a longer time (20-30 minutes) happens there something? (just heard this anywhere that you have to prog the key new)
As with any DIY video on youtube or elsewhere your luck may very. As you can see from the comments, several others have been successful with this method.
Brilliant! Thanks. First time I had both key batteries replaced on my A8, my local dealer charged me £27 ( about $43). This time I have now done it myself for a few pennies ( I already had a cheap pack of CR2032). Needless to say I am now in discussion with Audi about the overcharging.

Nobody ever said that pulling the 2 halves apart might break the plastic clip that holds them together… now I have a broken key fob.
I have been fumbling around trying to get to the battery afraid of breaking any plastic parts. Thanks for a clear and concise instructions.
Ya this was for the D3, not D2 model.
Glad it is the same method for the D2 A8’s.
Thanks!
FYI – 1999 A8s use two CR1620 batteries. For those of us slumming it in older A8s! Opening up key fob is the same as this.
My 99 A8 key fob eats batteries every 6 months and needs two not just one. Guess this is the newer design. It also has a range of about 1 ft.
thanx
Thanks so much! really useful post….

If you were a locksmith I suppose you could make something work, it would be hard though.
Could i get a switchblade key for a car and cut it for my house instead?
Glad it helped you out!
