Audi a4 1.8t AEB – how to test ICM ignition control module

How to test the ICM on Audi A4 1.8t motor’s with the ICM, typically 97-99.5 cars. I am not sure how conclusive the test is but if one cylinder is absolutely …

Hey, what does the ICM actually do. My 98 Audi a4 takes along time for
power to generate to the ignition, sometimes up to minutes, could this be a
bad ICM?

Your car should not start in drive. TCM going bad is a possibility but that
sounds more to me like the neutral safety switch, also called the
“Multifunction switch” on the drivers side of the transmission. If it
starts in drive, then that means that the car thinks it’s in park or
neutral when it is not. You will need to buy a vag-com cable on ebay and
download the vag com software to troubleshoot the car further. It’s very
easy and a sure fire way to tell. Sure beats guessing.

carlosg815 says:

It is supposed to take the fire signal from the ECU and amplify it out to
the coils to get a better spark. When you say it takes a long time to get
power to get to the ignition, I’m not sure what you mean. Can you explain
what you mean?

Well, Here lately the car has been starting intermittently, when I turn the
key to start the car I get no start or no sound, but if I keep turning the
key on/off eventually (5-10 minutes or so) It will start. I just realized
that if I put the car in drive and turn the key it starts right up. When I
bought the car the owner said the TCM was going bad but it still dives. So
i’m just trying figure out what could be going on. Thanks for getting back.

carlosg815 says:

If you are getting spark to 3 cylinders and all the pins on the ICM are
reading dead then it’s probable that you are reading it wrong and your
problem is somewhere else – perhaps a coil. Try swapping the coil on cyl.3
with the coil on cyl 2 and see if the code jumps cylinders. If it does, the
coil is probably bad.

Hey man, i have some issues testing my ICM, I did everything that you show
and the multimeter shows 1, no values, does it mean its open and not good
at all? even if i tetsted a brand new one and same result? I have made a
video if you want to look at it i tried for the past 2 months to find the
problem , the car is brand new at this point (really) 200 psi per cylinder,
engine rebuilt, harness for the coils coming from ecu is all new, and still
i have little to no spark on cyl.3!
