Acura MDX / Honda Pilot 3.5L V6 Timing Belt Replacement With Water Pump & Pulleys

Acura MDX / Honda Pilot 3.5L V6 Timing Belt Replacement With Water Pump & Pulleys

14 – 18 Acura MDX 16 – 20 Honda Pilot 18 – 20 Odyssey
14 – 20 RLX 15 – 19 TLX

These are the Acura and Honda vehicles powered by the 3.5L V6 engines with no power steering pumps (that is, replaced by a electric motor assist power steering system). The belt replacement procedure is different when compared with the hydraulic power steering system. This video will show you step-by-step on how to replace the timing belt, water pump, idler pulley and tensioner pulley performed on a 2016 Acura MDX. The procedure should be nearly identical with other Acura and Honda vehicles (list show below). This video was made possible by the GMB Corporation who was kind enough to provide OE (Original Equipment) quality replacement parts to perform this service. GMB is a Japanese auto parts manufacturer established in 1943 and maintains a global presence in the auto parts industry. Thank You GMB!

The timing belt service interval is approximately 105,000 miles or 7/8 years…whichever comes first. With 100,000 miles on this MDX, either the belt was stretching or the belt tensioner was beginning to fail.
Unless you have a powered impact tool used with 19 mm high mass impact socket, removing the harmonic balancer bolt is next to impossible. If you have no prior experience replacing a timing belt, expect to spend anywhere between 6 to 8 hours to complete the job. Replacement of the water pump will release coolant from the engine block. This would be a good time to change out the coolant from the radiator which would constitute a complete fluid exchange. Acura / Honda coolant, which is blue in color, will start turning green to indicate the coolant is beginning to wear out.

me and my husband are going to pull this off on our acura tlx 3.5 its gonna be nice… thankyou so much i am at 165k miles and yeah

TopNotch50 says:

DO you need to do a crank relearn after this?

Isaac Lartey says:

Excellent video and thanks for putting this together. One tip for removing the crankshaft bolt if the power tool does not do it for you will be to use a combination of: a 3/4 inch extension +++ a 3/4 inch breaker bar +++ a 19 mm 3/4 inch socket +++ a 50mm Crankshaft Crank Pulley Wrench Holder Tool

Tonyw2394 says:

Excellent video. Customer wants this done. Same as my accord which I figured it would be. Very good editing and very clear. 10 out of 10 video!

joseph plumber says:

how many miles were on the vehicle when the timing belt was changed? I had my 2006 Ridgeline timing belt changed at 87000 miles ( 12 years old ) and the original one looked almost new. I also have a 2010 accord v6 with 72000 miles and am wondering if I should change it because the car is now 13 years old and a long time before it ever reaches the recommended 105000 miles as per the owner's manual. Is it time that matters or mileage or both?

Willam Sharpe says:

I don't understand why marking the new belt makes a difference. I put a new t belt on a TL without marking and the car runs great.

Xiaoming Chen says:

Very good video. Will be ready for my 2017 acura mdx thank you.

Edens Nicolas says:

good afternoon, what is the name of those clamps used to hold the timing belt in place?.

Rick's Fixit says:

One of the best "how to" mechanics on YouTube! Your timing belt tutorials are the absolute best of any, bar none. Thank you for taking the time to explain and demonstrate each step!

Exceptional video. Thanks lot.

Excellent video. A true professional!

Mateusz Maliszewski says:

Great video I just did this on my 2019 that rolled 100k. Original parts looked brand new so I kind of wish I went 150-200k my dewalt dcf894 with high mass couldn't break the crank bold so I ended up breaking 2 3/8 extensions then went to harbor freight to get a 1/2 extension and breaker bar. Had to use all my strength with the jack method and it finally fucking broke loose. 3.5 hours to get the crank bolt loose and another 3 hours to do the timing job.

Patrick Pierre says:

I've changed over 4 of these timing belts…. that impact socket alone saved me about half an hours work. The marking on the belts… killer. THE BEST TUTORIAL HANDS DOWN. !!! Thank you man.

Steve Lee says:

Very nice video. I have 16 MDX with 92k, and plan to do mine soon. (along with 2nd tranny d&f, and spark plugs) Your video is by far the best one out there for this job. I have one question on the parts. Did you use oem parts from Acura? I see many people using Aisin parts, claiming that they are equal in quality. I've read on some forum where guys having to do this with cheap after market parts and breaking shortly after. Do I need to go to the dealer and get the expensive parts or do you have other suggestions.

thanks

alex morales says:

Great video my friend currently working on my wife’s Mdx getting the timing belt out on I got the top cam gears on my marks with the belt but noticed I forgot to mark the crank gear to the belt HELPP!!!

Former Engineer says:

Man, excellent video. I always use silicone grease on o-rings. It helps them wiggle into places and seat. This was advice from actual o-ring engineers back when I designed things that used o-rings.

My only question – no torque spec. for the crank pulley?

Alex Alex says:

Do you know, how to recognize the belt is fresh or not? This is a same idea like a tire, should be some information on the belt?

Floyd Lawler says:

Nice video! When installing new belt on front cam sprocket, how much can you safely rotate the sprocket counter clockwise for ease of lining up paint marks before the cam sprocket snaps counter clockwise causing damage?

DIY Michelangelo says:

Great video and thanks for sharing. I plan to remove the crank pulley bolt with a socket and extension and a long breaker bar. How do you keep the crank from turning while applying pressure on the bolt? How many miles on your MDX when timing belt was replaced?

kvo stava says:

Hello, I was wondering about the GMB kit, is it better than the Aisin timing belt kit?

Uglyfrogproductions says:

Thank you very much for this video. Gives ne confidence that i can do it myself!
