Got it. I backed up onto my ramps and It was by the passenger compartment
by the right rear wheel like you said. My J hose was OK though. But the 3/8
vacuum hose right next to it was cracked at the diaphragm it plugs in to.
It is just a 3 inch long “u turn” vac hose and I cut a piece from some
spare stock I had in the garage. I removed the code with my OBC reader so
we will see if there is more to fix. Thanks For the help !

silverS70 says:

@digearth22 The evap purge valve is located on the radiator fan shroud, on
the drivers side. Search online for what the part looks like, then look on
your car. Both are an easy DIY project. Good luck.

tks for you video save me 370$

dbecks44 says:

Excellent video – you’re an asset to YouTube! I have the same fault code in
my 2001 V70XC. Is it a similar layout? Just curious before I crawl under my
car and ruin a bunch of clothes…

robert feller says:

and if you see cracks in the hose but cannot get to it easily…get some
silicon and a rubber glove…slather it on your hand (with glove on!) and
coat that j-hose…it will see up the micro holes you will see there.

Very nice post ! Thank you! Volvo for Life!

AirAssaultMarc says:

Had the same code on wifes 04 XC70 Cross Country. Checked this hose & it
was good. Checked the gas cap O ring & it many small cracks Replaced the O
ring on the gas cap. Cleared the code & fixed the problem. I just bought a
cheap ($7.00) replacement cap at an auto parts store & swapped the O ring
out.

oops — that’s P0455

5uspended4nimation says:

Thanks. I understand the rest. I wanted to know because it may be in two
different locations in 1998. But I think when I did rear brakes the other
day I saw it.

silverS70 says:

@Eastsidegeorgiaboy Your probably thinking of part of the A/C system called
an Evaporator. I’d add a can of Freon to your system that contains dye in
it. Available at Auto stores. Borrow a black light to check for leaks. If
your car is a volvo 850/S70, its common that your evaporator dies and its a
very expensive fix at dealer cuz entire dash has to come out. If your sure
its your a/c evaporator, google volvo evaporator and look for woodjoiner
for pdf file on how to do it. Good luck.

silverS70 says:

On a Volvo S70, its underneath the car, in front of the passenger side rear
tire. Watch the video a couple of times and take a look underneath your
car. The video is pretty self explanatory.

Eastsidegeorgiaboy says:

what does this problem affect? Is it the A/C system, or something else.

kiomarv says:

Do you have any ideas about what often causes a P0446 DTC on a 2001 Volvo
S80. I smell fuel when I first start the car? Thanks.

Aaron Ashley says:

Okay so I also had a check engine light come on, but I can hear a ticking
noise comming from the back of the engine in my 2000 S70…what do you
think it might be?

silverS70 says:

@Eastsidegeorgiaboy Has nothing to do with A/C. Its Emissions related. The
Emission control system prevents the escape of fuel vapors from a vehicle’s
fuel system. Fuel vapors are routed by hoses to a charcoal canister for
storage. Later, when the engine is running a purge control valve opens
allowing intake vacuum to siphon the fuel vapors into the engine.

silverS70 says:

I’ve never worked on a neon. You’ll need to inspect the evap system
including all the hoses and purge solenoid. Could be a bad gas cap too.
Good luck, sorry I couldn’t help more.

mjcorp7652 says:

I am getting a P0445. I’ve replace the gas cap and I still get the code
after a few days. I did notice a fuel smell somewhere. Any other spots
where I can check? Any information would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Junfu Han says:

Do you know what might be the problem on a 96 volvo 850 non-turbo? thanks

Robert Davis says:

That J hose splits because the dam neck on the canister is larger then it
should be, or should I say the hose needs to be slightly bigger on the
canister end. Bad design.

silverS70 says:

@jolatunde Start by replacing your cracked J Hose. Clear codes and see what
comes back. P0445 could be bad evap purge solenoid located on radiator
shroud. Good Luck.

silverS70 says:

Your heater core is probably clogged. If you have ever used any Stop-Leak
in the coolant or radiator, its likely clogged. A long, but not impossible
fix. Google cleanflametrap to find a site with replacement pics. Good Luck.

dryroasted99 says:

Very good info. I am getting P0441 and P0442 and P0446 on 04 carolla any
help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

silverS70 says:

@scubbaj03. Its called Evap Canister Emission Hose. Search for it on FCP
Groton site. About 13 dollars. Part #9443308 for 2000yr GLT-SE.

Playincard says:

Great video, short and very accurate

edub234 says:

btw, i went to oreilly’s and picked up a 94 sentr radiator hose that works
perfectly on this if your local store doesn’t have this hose

silverS70 says:

@mjcorp7652 Its probably your evap purge solenoid located on your radiator
shroud. You should also check the lines going from the charcoal canister up
to the solenoid for cracks.

afarzaneh says:

Great video. Thank you.

5uspended4nimation says:

Hey can anybody identify where under the car you “look up there” to find
the hose the shape of a “J”?

Eastsidegeorgiaboy says:

@silverS70 Thanks for clearing that up. The reason I asked, was because I
am having problems with my A/C blowing hot air after about 15-20 minutes of
it blowing cold, and I cant seem to track down the problem. I am glad you
explained what it affected, and thanks for not calling me a dumbass for not
knowing what it did.

CJMop says:

Thanks for the video. I had the same code, did some research and came
across your video. I have a ’98 C70 so I had to roll the car up son some
blocks to get under it but sure enough my hose had a crack in the same
place. Took about an hour to remove and re install a new hose. Thanks for
posting!

silverS70 says:

I believe P0455 is a large leak. Check gas cap or other evap lines for
leaks. Mechanic could do smoke test too.

Gabriel Ward says:

Awesome video sir. Thank you for pointing this out!

paula Hankins says:

got a 1990 volvo 240dl heater blower working but no heat changed thermostat
and water pump and flushed all lines and still no heat…Any Advice and
does this have anything to do with the heat?

digearth22 says:

This video was very helpful, thank you!! I have a 99 V70 and the code read
that I have a bad evap valve as well as J hose. just wondering if you know
where the evap valve is located as well? Thanks again.

SCUBBAJ03 says:

WHAT IS THE ACTUAL NAME AND OR PART NUMBER OF THE “J HOSE” LOCATED NEAR THE
CHARCOAL CANISTER?? I’M TRYING TO ORDER A REPLACEMENT ONE FOR MY 987 S70
GLT AND I CAN NOT FIND IT ANYWHERE

Paul Macdonald says:

thanks for the video! I can’t believe you got under that car so fast!
