Thanks FCP! Brakes are working fantastic and grinding noise is gone, you
guys rock!!

FCP Euro says:

You really just have to sit down and measure the diameter. I find measuring
it with a string then measuring the string allows you to get the
measurement without taking the wheel off. Hope that helps.

Anthony Lombardi says:

I have a 2008 V8 S80. There are 3 different size rotors listed for this
car. How can I tell which rotor is needed for the front week brake
replacement?

FCP Euro says:

It’s non uncommon for new rotors to make a soft grinding noise especially
with zinc coated rotors. So long as your pads were in proper position on
the caliper when you slid it back into place you should be ok. You should
also bed-in your new brakes. Warm up the brakes by driving around gently,
then Make eight to ten near-stops from 60mph to about 10-15 mph. Do it HARD
by pressing the brakes firmly, but do not lock the wheels or engage ABS.
That should help remove some of the grinding you hear.

jazidup says:

So I just did the upgrade but i could not compress the piston (my channel
locks were too small). I managed to wiggle the caliper on with the pads and
the rotor was spinning even though the pads were in contact with the rotor.
The test drive revealed a low grinding noise during breaking. Do you
recommend I try to reset the piston again or is this common with new
rotors?

FCP says:

We’ve got some awesome new repair videos this week:
Volvo 850 302mm front brake upgrade:

ilimalama89 says:

Great vid. Front brakes/rotors are my next project for my 850.

JUANITO5338 says:

Ur pretty straightforward. . And easy to understand. Cool vid.

Mike Loucas says:

I’m first and I absolutely love this video. Always wondered how it’s done.
Very clearly demonstrated.

FCP Euro says:

Torque specs for items like the caliper bracket bolts and slider pins are
difficult to come buy. For the most part just make sure they are snug with
a wrench and you will be perfectly fine. Often time, we find that adding
some blue loctite to the caliper bracket bolts is beneficial as well. Hope
this helps.

Sun Shady says:

Thanks for the reply. I did replace with the Volvo Rotors and Ceramic
pads… they warped in time … Recently I changed the struts (they were
not too good). Maybe I do the Calipers and then Master Cylinder soon
after…

Christopher Godfrey says:

Sometimes brake videos can be dark, shadowy, and more like watching someone
else do it than a true instructional. This one’s well lit, and well
presented, and does exactly what it should do: inspires DIY confidence.
Well done guys.

Zoran Matuzalem says:

I’m interested in, how much better braking disc of 302mm .. say what is the
difference in percentages.?

Martin Gabel says:

Ben, your presentations are excellent. So is the supportive video work.
Thanks. A missing though. What are the torque specifications?

Tom Jones says:

Ceramics are only good for intensive braking as they only have good grip
when they are heated up, which usually doesn’t happen in most normal
driving conditions. If you don’t do racing, the semi-metallic ones (the
OEM) have better grip than the ceramic ones.

FCP Euro says:

Both great pads, you won’t really go wrong with either, Akebono pads are
ceramic, quiet and basically dust free with a more gradual initial bite.
The Genuine Volvo pads brake a little more aggressively and will produce
more dust than the Akebono.

FCP Euro says:

It did have some surface rust, but it was in decent condition, so a
replacement would have been just for cosmetic purposes. Hope that answers
your question!

FCP Euro says:

Glad we could help!

FCP Euro says:

The 16in factory wheels will clear it, the 15in will come into contact with
the caliper. Hope that helps!

mihalistro says:

How do the Akebono pads compare to OEM Volvo? Similar? Better? Thanks

FCP Euro says:

You should be fine, we have an employee here with the same setup as you
with the 302s, don’t hesitate to give us a ring at 1-877-634-0063 if you
have any more questions.

FastRedPonyCar says:

I’m wanting to do this on my 99 S70. Do the stock perfo wheels clear these?
Or does it require a 17″ wheel?

Michal Be says:

Hello I’ve got a question, about the type of 16′ rims this upgrade fits. My
850 T5 is equipped with Columba rims – are these enough spacey to work with
302mm discs with original calipers od new brackets? Thanks in an advance.

Sun Shady says:

I have a 2001 S60. I replaced the front rotors a year ago with Volvo brand
rotors. I used Ceramic pads from a local store (maybe Autozone or Pepboys).
The brake rotors seemed to have warped again. In the past, when I hit the
brakes, sometimes you can feel a little click click click in the foot
pedal. I let go and repress and it goes away. The car had bad struts in the
front. I replaced them. I had the brake fluid changed a while ago. Any idea
as to why my rotors are warping again?

burnout8488 says:

The Columba wheels are one of the few 16″ wheels that are incompatible with
the 302mm brakes *unless* you grind the ribs off the top of the calipers.
16″ Perfo wheels are great for the 302mm upgrade though.

FCP Euro says:

At 3:16 he explains that he doesn’t have the locating screw on his rotors
because his wheels don’t allow it. Hope that helps!

FCP Euro says:

Oops, that’s a mistake on our end, it does fit & we’re fixing the error
notification now. Thanks for letting us know!

mihalistro says:

Is this process pretty similar on a 2002 Volvo V40? Thanks

Wade Stablein says:

Great video, well articulated and demonstrated. Thanks for sharing!

ohs0fast says:

Great vid, thanks!! … but why not replace the caliper too since you have
it off and it’s def old and rusting?

FCP Euro says:

Thank you! It seems like everyone is a big fan of Ben.

Guillaume Wiatr says:

I agree with all comments, this video is excellent. One thing though, when
I go on the FCP website, it says this particular brake kit does not fit the
Volvo 850. Any idea why?

FCP Euro says:

Thank you for the kind words! Working with Ben is great, I wouldn’t be
surprised if you see more of him.

FCP Euro says:

It could really be anything from a bad match of compounds (rotor vs pad) to
driving conditions. I would start by replacing with a quality set of pads
and rotors and an inspection of the hoses, calipers, and rear brake
operation. Hope that helps.

FCP Euro says:

Well it’s about a 10% percent increase in usable braking area from a 288mm
rotor to a 302mm, it’s a pretty significant increase, and a very popular
upgrade. Hope that helps!

PunkRokkMonkey says:

Ben/FCP: Just wanted to say thank you. I tackled my front pads and rotors
in about an hour thanks to this video. Your walkthroughs are some of the
best I’ve seen. Great camera work and simple instructions. FCP is my new
go-to source for parts!

MatthewsVolvoSite says:

Good video. cgodfrey19, they’re using a high-end DSLR, I can hear the
aperture clicks (opening up) when they go in the wheel well. I agree:
production values are important because viewers need to see what Ben is
doing. After all, this stuff is literally “hands-on”. If you have Columba
wheels, like my avatar, you have a choice to make: grind down calipers or
get different wheels.

tcl505 says:

Best technical video FCP has to date. Proper use of toque wrench,
lubricants, and surface preparation will make this assembly work right and
last for years. Parts links were included and tips on best tools for this
application were mentioned. Very good video.

FCP Euro says:

Yes, almost identical from what I remember.
