Volvo Automatic Transmission Service DIY (S60, S80, V60, V70, XC60, XC70, XC90 & More)

►Is your transmission slipping? Are you experiencing any hard or overly aggressive shifts? Have you gone 30,000 miles or more since your last fluid change? If you’ve answered “yes” to any of these questions, it’s time to service your Volvo’s automatic transmission.

In this DIY FCP Euro’s Volvo Catalog Manager, Adam Goral, walks us through the necessary steps in order to drain, fill, and replace the fluid in your Volvo’s transmission. We’ll also discuss the tools needed, parts recommended to replace, and any tips and tricks to expedite the process.

This is a comprehensive kit put together by Adam that includes everything you need to get the job done, including the updated spec of fluid provided by Aisin. This includes the fluid and gaskets you need as well as seals & plugs that otherwise may be forgotten. Aisin is the manufacturer of the TG-81SC and TF-80SC transmissions, so you know you’re using the highest quality fluid and components in your Volvo when you purchase this particular kit.

Aisin Type WS fluid is the only approved oil for Aisin TG81SC transmissions. None of the other fluids available on the market have been evaluated by Volvo to meet the requirements of these specific transmissions regarding shift quality, slipping lock-up functionality and transmission durability.

Final fluid level should be set while the transmission temperature is warm (50-60C) with engine running on a level surface. An electronic TCM reset is highly recommended after the oil change, especially if it has been a while since the last service.

We recommend replacing or changing the fluid in your Volvos automatic transmission roughly every 30,000 miles. If you are unsure of when the last time your Volvo has had its fluid changed – it’s a good idea to go ahead and change it for peace of mind. It is also a good idea to change the fluid if you are experiencing and slipping or hard and overly aggressive shifting from the transmission.

Great video, thanks. Although shouldn’t you also drop the pan and change the filter and gasket?

Also, is it not necessary to complete the VIDA/DICE procedure, just bring the car up to operating temperature before final fill?

Appalling68 says:

I'll post this question for anyone out there: I have a 2017 Volvo XC90, D5 AWD with the 8-speed auto transmission (this car is located in Spain). I have about 115k km on the car now (about 71k miles, almost all of them autopista or highway kms/miles), and the transmission is beginning to shift roughly, especially when slowing down and the car downshifts. I asked my Volvo dealer here in Spain several months ago if they would change out the fluid (never been changed) and their reply was, "The fluid is for the life of the car. It doesn't need changing and we will not do it."

Can I take this vehicle to an independent mechanic for a transmission fluid change? Should I?

Joseph Holland says:

06 xc90 124k what fluid type for the 2.5I T5

Bellakelpie says:

I am hoping that this video can also be sued as a guide to changing the fluid on an Aisin TF71SC Transmission, as fitted to the 2016-2020 Volvo V40 with 2.0 liter "Drive E" 4 cylinder turbo engine.

igoldin74 says:

The small clips are reusable as well, don’t pull them, just cut the tie leave clip in place and use a new one on the old clip.

Marcus Bergqvist says:

why do you have to switch on the air filter between oil changes? should it not work without the short time indoors or is this necessary?

ugh3012 says:

Why is there no auto text for deaf people to follow this!!!

Greg Crabb says:

Will that Maxicheck reset the fluid counter on the Volvo? I'll buy one if it will. If not, is there one that can do it?

Strat Man says:

No filter to change?

Andrew Edwards says:

I'm reasonably certain that I have the same AISIN 8-speed in my MK7.5 Golf Sporwagen. Very good video!

SERGIO XIE says:

Very useful videos! Thanks a lot! But where can i get the new o-ring for plug?
