The solenoid is on the starter, the round part with the small wire going to it.

BondoFox says:

Thanks 😛

You’re my new best friend, I got that starter out thanks to you!

So, where is the solenoid, anyway? Just in case I have to replace it.

And thanks!

BondoFox says:

Thank you! Now to find the solenoid 😛

Hey, for the record, you’re my new best friend. I just got my starter out, replacing it tomorrow 🙂

RSpi007 says:

LOL, yea that was a bummer.

The small green wire is for the solenoid.

BondoFox says:

Thanks a million for this, my 850 stranded me and I had to have it towed home. I thought if the starter were bad that it would at least have tried to spin, but I reckon not. Thanks for the video!

But I have to admit, it was funny when you said, “Okay, hit the starter!” after all of that work and nothing happened 😉

By the way, which terminal is the starter solenoid?

apollofalling says:

I have the same problem, so cleaned my battery terminals and connectors, now charging the battery. Will see if that cures my 97 non turbo 850. Thanks again for the insight.

RSpi007 says:

Sounds like the battery is now to low to start the car.

RSpi007 says:

My car would crank with 9.4 volts. But my battery cable connections were bad and I was only getting about 7.2 volts to the starter. There is a good chance that the starter is bad. You can turn the ignition to run (all dash lights lit), then jump the starter (connect something from the starter solenoid wire and main power wire on the starter). If the car starts you know you have a bad solenoid. If you hear NOTHING then the starter motor is locked up. You really need to check volts with a load on.

rb26dett32 says:

I have power at the starter and the command wire at the starter. The battery has 12.3 volts but I haven’t actually had it tested for cold cranking amps. But even if it was REALLY low it would still do something. Right now it’s doing literally nothing. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I’m stuck walking to work until I can get this thing fixed. Thanks for the videos and also any advice you may have.

I have a S80 that wouldn’t start. Was making a humming/grinding sound when I turned the key. I thought the starter was probably bad. I took it out and it was full of rust and metal shavings. I replaced it with a new one that has been tested and now when I turn the key to start the lights turn off but nothing else happens until I let go of the key. At that point the lights come back. I also hear the fuel pump and relay click. I think its the Immobilizer or the neutral safety switch. Any idea?

RSpi007 says:

If cranking is interrupted my guess would be PNP switch or ignition switch.

Very good. Quick question, my car(850 T5), on two separate occasions, while starting, cuts power for a split second then continues to crank, then starts right up(within a 3 second timeframe). This may be a battery cable issue more than a starter issue. What is your expert advice? No corrosion on battery terminals, Optima yellow top installed. Thanks

RSpi007 says:

I have only had 2 850’s, the yellow and the black wagon I now have. However, I have had 12 total, I think. I love the 960’s, I think they are the best all around car the Volvo ever built.

RSpi007 says:

I did check the voltage, but I didn’t do it correctly. I should have measured at the battery, then at the starter to compare. My meter doesn’t show how many volts there is, just moves across the scale and I have to know where 12, 14, 10, etc. are.

The very common problem with these cars is the power lead corroding internally. They like to corrode at the battery terminal. If you cut that terminal off and put a new one on at the end, you may get a little more life out of it.

candleburning says:

I thought you checked the voltage on the starter in the beginning of the video.

My car turns over but only starts every third try. I suspect the starter but I’m not
getting the click and nothing that so many people report.

Any chance the ignition switch could cause this problem? I need to replace this since
I often need to wiggle the key to get lights.

Thanks. Very helpful video series for us 850 fans. Just wondering how many you
have/had. Did I see a yellow T-5 in one of your videos?
