I do not understand the question. You need a Volvo or Bosch brand, at least that is what I would get. Many parts stores have them. Or you can get one from a salvage yard.

I’m pretty sure the nut is on the drivers side. Put a 3/8″ ratchet on it, I believe it’s a 13mm nut, then put a breaker bar on it, a small one. Once it’s broke loose it will come the rest of the way off easy.

Hey RSpi007 i am tryin to get my alternator out to replace it with a new one. I have a 98 s70 and it seems to be the same as the one you did however i cannot get the bottom screw for the alternator out what did you use to get it out? i did take out the dipstick but just cant get enough leverage on the screw.

RSpi007 says:

Yep, that would be me. LOL

Alex Bendel says:

RSPI? Are you the guy with the cool Yoda figurine on the volvo forums website?

RSpi007 says:

Cool, glad it helped. If I can remember to keep my phone charged I’ll do more videos. LOL

lifting 3 tabs on each side. This gave a lot of extra muscle room and access for the tensioner. The hard part was getting the bolt that runs behind and beneath the alternator x_x. A lot of different size extensions, and maybe a flex line wouldve helped speed things along. No forum helped as much as your video here did and we worked almost exclusively off of it :)! Saved our cans. Do a few gen4 camaro vids ;).

herrcobblermachen says:

Whew. This was a breeze salvaging at the junkyard. Less than an hour. the box-end wrench trick really helped here. Installing it- not so easy, perhaps 7hours. Indeed the 3/4 socket was too large for the tensioner hole as you said, and twisted about 10 quarters in two:P. We fashioned flat piece of metal that fit diagonally into the square hole and it worked first time with the right pair of pliers. To get extra space you can remove not only the lid, but the sides of the computer box by lifting…

It took more time to go to auto zone and o’ Riley’s and purchase a new alternator. Had to go to a different nearby store if I wanted it same day

RSpi007 says:

Man, you are welcome. I have a few laser pointers so I may try that next time. I used a highlighter on a few of my video’s. The bolts on the power steering pump assembly are hard to find/see. Glad the instructions helped. I really have heard people say it took 10 hours to do this job.

BrandonZ13 says:

Also just a suggestion, you should get a laser pointer to show bolts.
I’m gonna be dong the door prop next. It’s got that pop sound

BrandonZ13 says:

Thank you so much for this great vid. Watched it twice with my girl, got all the tools set up and had this video on my iPad as reference along with some Volvospeed forums haha. Ended up making the chain tensioner tool with 3 quarters and vice grips worked great. Bought a new one and put it in. Once everything is out run the bolts through everything separately to clear out old crap that will block the bolts but give you a great reference putting it back in.
I cannot thank you enough

RSpi007 says:

No it’s a little smaller than 3/4″. Strange. Believe it or not, I’ve been through 2 camera people. I guess I may have to find a paid one. LOL

herrcobblermachen says:

Thanks a lot, that supplementary video shows it very well. The tool is essentially a 3/4inch barstock then. Thanks for your video, best ive found, all you need is a camera man and you’re 100%

RSpi007 says:

The hole in the serpentine tensioner is an odd size. So a lot of people either purchase a special tool for something like $30 or scrounge around for something that kinda fits the hold and use it to release the tension to remove the belt. The tool I had manufactured fits very well and the tensioner can be pinned open for you to work without fighting with the thing. I have another video that may help explain as well. Search Volvo 850 serpentine belt removal or find this video. CZ5yN_IUs9M

herrcobblermachen says:

Can you explain the use of your tensioner & screw tool?

RSpi007 says:

My alternator initially failed at 223,200. I installed a used one harvested from a junk yard which tested good at O’Rielly’s and bad at AutoZone (I later learned that their machine was broken). A month later I had a starter fail and the alternator was showing low volts (10.9v to 11.2v) intermittent. So I pulled another alternator from another junk yard which tested bad. Went back and got another which tested good. So, at 223,850 I have another jy alternator with a 6 month warranty.

RSpi007 says:

Thanks! I really just started posting “DIY” videos about a month ago. I made a link for my signature and I usually google the topic and post in a few different forums but not all the other sites.
