How to remove and install a turbo charger, Volvo S70, 850, V70, etc. – VOTD

Turbo replacement: 2 to 4 hours ($75 / $1200 / $1700)

In this video I swapped out a turbo on a ’98 Volvo S70 T5. This process is the same for most of the P80 Volvo cars.

Hello Robert! Real easy for me to follow your video, not sure where some of this criticism comes from… anyway, I owned a '95 850 turbo wagon about 15 years ago which was great until the transmission went, and shortly after having it completely rebuilt the turbo started smoking. This all occurred around 160,000 miles if I recall correctly.

My question is, I'm in the market for a '01 or newer V70 and I didn't know if the newer models are inherently problematic like my 850 was. My guess is yes, but I wanted your prospective. Also, I've been checking out the t5 models. I understand that the turbos on these are "higher pressure" , but are they just as prone to failure as the "low pressure" ones are?. Is there anything I should look for on a '01 v70 with around 170000 miles? I'm the type who doesn't mind replacing a turbo or even a Transmission if I absolutely had to, but I don't want to invest in a car today and be fixing things next week either.

Vojislav Ristic says:

Hi Robert. Is it possible to get some engine oil to water coolant trough turbo malfunction or lets say this membrane fault as you show on this video?
I have 1998 V70 turbo 2.0l automatic
On this model as I where told by my mechanic there is no oil heather so we rule out that possibility and we change head gasket so I think maybe turbo is the main reason?I need to wash out the engine <water coolant>as per shown on one of your video and if I still have this oil problem what should I door check further?Tnx in advance

still around man???

Hey Robert, my V70 AWD has the red triangle warning light, and it's making a weird metallic sound, I'm confident in my mechanical knowledge, but I'm worried about all the vacuum lines, also. (It's a 2001) if it ends up being a bad turbo is it still the same process?

Lucas Rodriguez says:

excuse me Robert but I have a 2004 XC70 will these instructions be the same or no please help

Kayla Johnson says:

Hi Robert. im having issues with the eliectrical system on my s70. its doing all kinds of things like it has a mind of its own.some times it will start and then others it acts like a dead battery. the battery is fine as it is brand new. anyhelp would be great

Dana Kelley says:

Thanks Robert for the commen sense video. Going to remove and rebuild a friends turbo on his1998 Volvo wagon after a flake went to jail. I don't like to tell alot of people that Im a half ass descent mechanic, because every Tom, Richard and Harry will want me to wrench on their piece of s#!@. Oops, I Mean vehicle. Anyways, thank you sir!

TheTiredEye says:

I've been looking at new turbo online and they all seem to come with the flange connection to the exhaust, though on your video it looks like only the actual turbo was replaced. Is it difficult to get the exhaust side off and does it require its own gasket? thanks for your time! great info as always

Francis Reardon says:

I plan on leaving the driveshaft out and just having front wheel drive so hopefully I should not run into any problems with any leakage that would be awesome thank you

Francis Reardon says:

hey Robert if I remove the drive shaft will the front and the rear leak fluid and if so what can I do to stop it that is my plan to remove the drive shaft I'm hoping that will cure the problem I did check the tires they are all from the same manufacturer in the same size the only difference is in the rear for some reason somebody put on rain tires but the wear is the same on all the treads. it is that bad that I have to disconnect the all wheel drive driveshaft i can drive down the road 70 80 miles an hour no problem straight but at low speed having to turn hard when I'm trying to park the vehicle or what not yes it binds right up so my question to you is once I remove the driveshaft do I have to do anything special to it not knowing if it's going to leak fluid or not I had watched a video on how to remove the drive shaft we almost had it out at one point and had a hard time trying to separate it from the rear disconnected the front first and not the rear so was I doing something wrong I appreciate all your help let me know thank you again

Francis Reardon says:

I was responding to your comments on my 99 Volvo S70 all wheel drive you would ask me if the engine light was on it is and if the transmission had been service lately that I don't know as I just purchased a vehicle and you asked me if the vehicle would roll in neutral it does until I turn the wheels and then it locks up rather than me texting everything again if you look at the comments you may be able to help me out

Francis Reardon says:

the car does roll in neutral until I turn it to the right of the left and then it grabs I do not know if the transmission has been serviced since how I just got the vehicle and yes the check engine light is on

Francis Reardon says:

I just took it to a local shop someone had put a 98 rear end in this is it all wheel drive is that compatible they seem to think that it's in the drivetrain what is your thought the reason I think it's a 98 rear end is because when I went to replace the rear pads what I got for the 99 were not correct and they figured it out that they were in 98 again what is your thought

Francis Reardon says:

Robert Diy I have a problem with my front end while turning to the right or left once I start to move eventually it'll grab like the brake is locking up and will not roll unless under power and that's when it grabs don't know what's going on took the break caliper off and cleaned with sand paper with the pads fit and grease them thinking maybe that they were grabbing that way don't know what's going on any suggestions I have used your other videos doing heater core timing belt and other issues and really find them useful a reply would be greatly appreciated

The 4K Senator says:

See your camera work is terrible (respectfully) on your videos. So I had to look at this video to find the missing information I needed to confirm where the turbo drain line is. Camera work 16:1016:20 is what I'm saying you need to do more of to make / help us follow what, where and how to fix the problem. Not those super close ups where you could be anywhere in the engine to a novice that's trying to follow you.

Gordon302 says:

+Robert DIY, Considering the amount of time & effort put into removing a turbo, it would be pointless to assume that just because the cartridge spins freely that, "the turbo is ok". For example, if you truly have oil bypassing from the exhaust manifold, then your valve guide seals are worn out. Also, these valve guides wear out sooner than the intake side, because the exhaust runs hotter than the intake side. However, considering that your replacement turbo came from a salvage yard, at minimal, perform a teardown inspection & probably a rebuild. I recall my last rebuild kit being around $150.00

HenryTech says:

Hi Robert i am having trouble getting my new turbo back on the car. The turbo has no in/out or side to side play and spins freely but when on the car and aligned it it doesnt spin freely anymore

JAMCastillo1 says:

I have a 2000 volvo s40, after i used sea foam engine cleaner my car has been smoking ever sense. the smoke smells like burning oil and the car is just losing oil even when not driven but not leaking out the car. do you know what that could be?

Terel Hayes says:

srbinsrpski says:

Hi Robert I have some problem with my 850 turbo, when i stop at traffcic light and when I put my foot on gas pedal i can see blue smoke come out of exaust and after that in driving no smoke. I checked turbo and it no have axial, but at bottom of turbo is some oil leak. What could be problem?

CarlosGlatzos976 says:

Robert, your videos are as ever very helpful for any Volvo owner. I currently try to remove the turbo from my 2005 V70 T5 but it is a real pain. Almost no place to work, tight spaces where screws are absolutely insane to reach, the horror! Thanks anyway, I like your videos very much. Maybe I will go back to an older 960/V90 for convenience in repairing it myself 🙂 Cheers !!

Christopher Burtraw says:

I'm about to pull one off an s70 with a seized engine. I want to sell it but want to try to check if it's good before sale. Seemed to work before the engine locked up.

What should I check for aside from the soot on the turbine wheel?

asdpano says:

thanks for the guide, helped me really much! 🙂
