How to Install Volvo Electric Power Steering Pump into Most Cars

In this video I fabricate an electric power steering set up into my 240sx drift car. I hope this video will save you time and money on your power steering solutions on whatever you may be building.
Have you ever had leaking power steering, or a seized power steering pump, or maybe even an engine swap that has no power steering compatibility? Well this video may have the solution to your power steering problem.

TIPS:
1. Make sure when you are ordering your power steering pump that it comes with the wiring pig tails. You might be able to find aftermarket ones, but OEM is best.
2. There are also 2 styles of reservoirs to these pumps. The style in this video has the cap included, but there is another style that has an extension to a separate tank (in place of the cap).
3. If you would like to install this pump onto a different chassis, the main difference will be the rack and pinion adapters, since they need to be specific to the chassis..

I spent the last 7 years building this 1990 Nissan 240sx from the ground up. I swapped out the KA24e for a KA24de. Then once more for a RB25det out of a R34 Skyline and couldn’t be happier. I have also converted the 240 to right hand drive, (which ended up saving my life!) After installing a few drift parts; such as a hydro E – Brake, and dual rear calipers, welded diff, solid suspension bushings and more, the car handled amazing. Surprisingly this S13 was able to drift and stay sideways perfectly despite the damage that was done to it.

Random request if you ever see this;
Can you stick a sound lever recorder app next to the pump to see how loud it is in decibels? Also does the pump get hot during normal operation or is it whatever

Jo d'anjou says:

Hello i want to rewire a trw pump lique this one but i am not sur how to taque of the plus and grown canbyou help please

Alex burns says:

Got part number on the electrical connectors?

teamidris says:

3/8” BSP is just a tad too big. Grab a male/male adapter, skim off 0.15mm off the thread and it die’s okay at 16mm by 1.5mm. A Dowty washer looks okay on the face. *the cheap Chinese tap and die set wins again :o) Big spade connectors are the yellow size and the small trigger one is the ickle red spade. I just need to watch the vid for the pin-outs. Could of done with a clear shot of that in the vid. I got mine for £55. Wish me luck 😀 Mitsubishi fork truck steering valve should be here Monday . . .

teamidris says:

Sweet, I like it, let’s get one bought 😀

I have the same setup on my car and it seems to catch when I try to steer real fast. Did you ever encounter this problem?

Dave Sharp says:

SO. You reference that you are using a 30 amp maxi fuse for the electric pump power supply.
slightly different application. I have installed this same electric pump in my old cj5 Jeep running a 60 amp fuse.
If I dead X the steering for more than a split second or steer while braking hard going down steep obstacles,
I blow the 60 amp maxi fuse. I am wondering if I am putting a greater load on the motor or if I have an issue.
During normal operation, the thing steers like a dream right up till it loads hard.

Thomas Joyce says:

Hey man , just did this step by step and everything is good no leaks but the steering wheel just starts twitching by its own when it's on. Did you run into this ? Any ideas ?

Anthony Hambric says:

Where do I find a list of fittings and part numbers?

KookiDowg says:

Thank you very much for this!

I'm currently about to mount my Volvo V50 pump hidden behind the fender well. I have the one where there's a reservoir for the filler with a hose that leads to the main reservoir and the pump.

I can't wait to be able to turn off my power steering for the track days and then back on when just driving on the streets!

Dylan Multanen says:

Might do this because of clearance issues on my 3sge beams swap. I don't think I'll mount in the cabin though due to the whirring noise. Might mount it near the frame rail or something

Mark Nechvatal says:

Does the pump ever shut off when car is running? Say going in straight line or at stop light?

Gary G says:

great vid just think your a bit of a fanny eating like that while driving on a public road.

ADZY995 says:

what steering rack are you running ?

Michael Oster says:

Seriously considering doing this to my old monte carlo. Tired of going through old/reman hydraulic pumps every year or so

Lance LaPointe says:

Thanks! Got all the answers I needed!

Winston says:

YouTube actually suggested something good! This was awesome. No blah blah blah for 15 minutes before showing the process. Thank you! Subscribed!

Jamie says:

It'll also gain you probably 10-20hp if other engine dyno channels are correct. Running a mechanical pump is a big draw, but adding a few dozen amps resistance to the alternator makes no difference at all. Can do electric water pump for the same benefit.
