Thanks for taking the time to do this video. a great help to a DYSer. Looking forward to finding out what’s wrong with your starter inside>
I’ve got a golf 3 GTI 8V 96′ model. I’ve been having problems with the starter for the past few months. I have to keep tapping it with a spanner or hammer and then she starts only. I assume the solenoid sticking is the problem. This happens every couple of days and usually when its really hot. Should I replace the whole starter or just the solenoid? If I do replace the solenoid only do I have to remove the whole starter unit to do so?
with a suitably sized thread tap (think its m12)… simple, piece of cake
how did you remove that?
how do you remove that piece?
You’re welcome.
Great educational video tanks a lot.
ye, sounds about right… should be replaced with new
pinion gear pilot bushing
inside the gearbox bell housing there is a brass bush that the starter motor shaft slides into, it should be replaced whenever doing a starter motor replacment.
Other than the car into your garage, you never explained why or showed how you hit the start with a hammer.
Between the solenoid and the starter you’ll find a braided wire. Make sure that cable/wire is not corroded or broken. I have another video on starter motor troubleshooting you should check out if you haven’t already. It’s called: “Starter Motor Troubleshooting Tips DIY – How to diagnose starter problems” /John
Good video. I’m having trouble starting my 2004 bug. Sometimes it starts but sometimes it doesn’t. I can put my hand on the starter relay and turn the key (i feel the relay click). I’ m assuming the relay switch is good and the stater solenoid is bad.
Thanks
going to eventually have to do all this. your videos are entertaining in the process.
This video is very helpful my grandmother showed me how to change the spark plugs and put on new cables on her 95 Cabrio today we started changing the starter but the bottom bolt would not go in right tomorrow we will try again. We already replaced the fuel and water pump so hopefully we are getting closer to getting it running. Thank you for this video is is very helpful.
Awesome. Congrats. /John

This video was awesome! Thanks so much.
There are little commutator bars (strips of metal) that get burned and the starter stops in a position where the brushes contact the bad bars. Enough current can’t flow to the armature (the part that spins) to get the starter motor to spin. If you bang the starter it can slightly dislodge the armature enough for the brushes to contact a different commutator bar that is in better shape. /John
this video was very informative. i dont know how to fix cars but to listen was GREAT!!
You never got to why u bang the starter not with a hammer. My ?? is what is suppose to happen when you bang starter. Though my son tried that it still didn’t start. Cant wait to see you take the starter apart.
You mean like a pilot bushing? Sorry, I don’t know. /John
Do you know which motor/transaxle combinations require the replacement of the bushing where the starter shaft engages into the bell housing?
You’re welcome. Good luck. /John
This is actually going to be my weekend project, this video will probably save me a ton of work. Thanks for posting it.
thank you very much.
One of the starter mounting bolts runs through an engine mount and holds the mount to the engine. You have to remove that bolt to get the starter off. The mount has two bolts and does not have to be removed. When you take the bolt out the engine may fall just a little (maybe an inch) and you’ll want to put a jack under the engine and raise it to make the bolt hole line up with the mount again. Yes, you can change it in the driveway. Thanks for watching & commenting. /John
Glad I could help. Thanks for watching. /John
can you tell me why you raise the motor?and does the engine mount have to come off ,or u just loosen it,can i do this in my driveway?
AWESOME VIDEO…you saved my life

Thank you very much sir, for the video. I had the jack on the other end of the motor and that was a pain in the ass to get the starter/motor mount aligned right. I felt like an idiot when realizing there’s a mount on the same side where I put the jack that prevented me from playing with the starter/mount to get into place. You saved me from going crazy hahah. Very infromative, A+++++
