Bigus Dickus says:

Any chance you might be able to help me?
Ive got a vw golf 1.9 tdi 6 speed,
its a bit notchy when changing from 1st to 2nd gear all the other gears are
fine, even going into reverse. could this maybe help it, or could i end up
making things worse by messing around with this?? should i check for
looseness in the cables when i pull back and lock the springs

dieselgeekdotcom says:

The procedure is really the same though the tranny locking pin is in a
different place. If you watch the third install video on my Sigma 6 shifter
product page you will see the position of the locking pin. Your locking pin
will look different from the video. The Sigma 6 pdf manual will also show
the early locking pin you have.

Mo M says:

I have a golf 4 tdi 6 speed year 2001 ajm. This procedure is available for
me?

Terry Wills says:

I have a 2008 City Golf (Canada) and this solution worked amazingly. Just a
note, make sure that when you release the cable springs, you make sure they
return all of the way back. The first time I did this, I lost first gear
because the linkage shifted after 5 minutes. I repeated the steps and this
time made sure the springs had fully returned (there is almost a ridge that
you have to pull past) and now my first gear is perfect. My car shifts
better than it did when it was new. Thanks.

dieselgeekdotcom says:

Like I’ve mentioned before, having someone else shift while you watch the
parts on top of the transmission might tell you what is wrong. If you have
a lot of play in the side to side (left to right) direction you might have
a bushing that has gone bad. I have seen more and more of this. Please
direct any further questions to me at dieselgeek.

Pat D says:

hello nice video i was wondering if you could help me out i have a mk4 golf
tdi 6 speed and it wont go into reverse 1st 2nd when running ,but will when
not running is it same problem as this ?

TheRichiedichie says:

This is honestly one of the best tutorials I have ever seen on YouTube. It
didn’t solve my problem I’m afraid, I have a 1997 2.0 8v GTi Golf. The
clutch is slipping and I recognise this is a common problem, but there is
zilch on resolution of the problem. It is a self adjuster and I think that
is the problem. Thanks for a very instructive Video, (Now I’ll have to try
to find out why my Renault isn’t correctly adjusted!)

dieselgeekdotcom says:

You need to have someone else move the shifter so you can eyeball the parts
on top of the transmission to see where the freeplay is. You likely have
something loose though I cannot say what that is. It is uncommon. Please
email me directly at dieselgeek if you have further questions.

lawkee01 says:

I have a MK6 and there’s a lot of free play in the shift box. I can wiggle
the shifter about an inch from side to side while in gear and in neutral.
Is this common on the MK6 and any fix for this?

bikeandboard95 says:

its a 6 speed also

bikeandboard95 says:

inside the car i can get into where reverse should be but it stays in first
any ideas?

Sergio Perez says:

This help me a lot fixing my 01 jetta about almos 3 weeks ago.

Patwwa Productions says:

See now i have a stock 99 mk4 Golf gls and….my linkages do not look like
that.. are there any other tutorials.. that i can find.. or can you
explain..i replaced my clutch and now i cant shift into reverse. There
shifter doent reach the gear entirely.. its like 2 inches away from being
in position but i can manual put it into reverse under the hood.

Julio Villalta III says:

are you able to double clutch it in to 4th (instead of downshifting like
usual, clutch, throw into neutral, clutch, shift into 4th)? i see much
benefit thatthe short shifter could have with comfort of shifting, but
honestly your issue sounds like it could be directly due to the cable
linkage needed to be adjusted like in the video

Marek Jańczak says:

The Europe thank you for this video 🙂

Fernando prec says:

my shift is old system for audi a3 1997, dont have a hole for lock pin in
shifter inside the car, how can i lock to do the adjustment? you have any
idea?

crazyenergyprojects says:

Your shifter is completely different. There is a black plastic cable holder
on top of the transmission that has a 13mm nut which, when loosened, can
slide fore/aft to adjust shifting accuracy for first gear. If reverse or
fifth gear are hard to get then this plastic part is likely broken and can
be bought at your VW/Audi dealer with part number 1J0 711 256. please email
me at dieselgeek if you need further assistance as this video only deals
with cars from 2000 onwards.

lostmeselfinmymind says:

Thanks for the video, helped me fix my brothers 01 turbo diesel beetle. Was
having a hard time going into first, not any more. Great Video!

Greg Hussey says:

Would this fix my 2nd to 3rd grind? When shifting from 2-3 if I shift too
fast is will grind. I need to wait a second with pressure to pop I into
third.

dieselgeekdotcom says:

I would only adjust the linkage if you are having shifting issues or have
removed cable ends from the cables for any reason such as a clutch change…

francois levesque says:

What if your locking lever is not functioning in the manner it was designed
to? Is there another way to lock it into home position?

dieselgeekdotcom says:

A 5mm drill bit should not be too hard to find in the UK. Also, if you have
a hobby shop close that sells R/C equipment, the T-rex 450 and most other
helicopters in that size class use a 5mm main rotor shaft that is exactly
5mm.

dieselgeekdotcom says:

The problem is likely with your counterweight. If it is loose then the
internal spline is wallowed out. It will never shift correctly if the
counterweight is loose. Try tightening it. Use blue locktite on the nut. If
it is still wobbly after tightening it then you need a new stock lever or
you can replace it with one of our Sigma shifters.

jonathan tracy says:

Thanks man, feels good as new.

Eric Eidenberger says:

what do you do if your aftermarket shifter doesn’t have a home position pin
hole 🙁

bmxdan08 says:

Nice one cheers for the reply

dieselgeekdotcom says:

To keep your current adjustment you can mark the cable with a spot of paint
or just do the adjustment over again. What shifter bushings are you
installing? email me at dieselgeek

D Jenkins says:

Hello VW brothers/sisters. Mine’s a 2005 Golf 2L 5sp 74K km or 46K miles.
My only trouble is when the engine is on, shifting from N to 1st is so hard
(no grinding or any other noise) just damn hard. But this problem goes away
when car starts to move. From 2nd to 5th is butter smooth. With engine off
I can cycle all gears with no issue, soft and clean. Shifting from N to 1st
or N to R is heavy but only when the car is fully stopped. It feels like my
shifter could break. Any ideas? Warranty done.

Anthony Wright says:

I tried this adjustment exactly how you did it. And it worked now I have
first exactly where it should be. But now I cant get it in 5th gear. Is it
possible to go to far with the adjustment? Should I just keep trying
Different adjustments? Or do you think its something else? Thank you for
your help btw!

dieselgeekdotcom says:

At 4:23 onward is the removal of slack/preloading of the mechanism.

coggbear says:

My 2000 vw jetta has a very stiff nutral and what i mean by this is its
very stiff from side to side also hard going into first and reverse what
can i do i tried this process to no help if any. Thanks much Tony.

dieselgeekdotcom says:

Watching the video is the only way I can help you to preload the cable.
This is the same thing as taking the slack out. I really meant preloading.
The answer is in what I do in the video.

undeniablyd says:

I have a 2000 MKIV Jetta 2.0, and only a 3mm Allen Wrench. Before, the only
way I could get into 1st and 2nd Gear was to drop the shifter into reverse
gear and easing out into 1st and second gears! After this tutorial, I can
confirm this method works; I’m back to normal. Thank You.
