Volkswagen Mk5 GTI Timing Belt & Water Pump Replacement DIY (2006-2008.5 VW GTI, BPY, CRZA EA113)

Volkswagen Mk5 GTI Timing Belt & Water Pump Replacement DIY (2006-2008.5 VW GTI, BPY, CRZA EA113)

►Your engine takes in air and makes explosions thanks to the valves and pistons working together. The Mk5 GTI uses a timing belt and a small timing chain to keep its EA113 engine in time, but both can wear out. Replacing the GTI’s timing belt and chain prevents the pistons from kissing valves and severely damaging the engine. While you’re in there, you’ll want to change the water pump, too.

The water pump, driven by the timing belt, can last between 60,000 and 100,000 miles. The timing belt generally lasts around the same, so the two make a logical replacement pairing. Replacing your GTI’s water pump won’t require extra work and is a “while you’re in there” service. Overheating an engine can damage it, like a snapped belt, so ensure your engine’s health with a fresh one.

In this video, Mike Hiadlgo, FCP Euro’s Professional DIY’er, replaces the timing belt and water pump on a Mk5 VW GTI.

What would cause a new water pump to fail and leak out of the weep hole?
