How to properly install and SET TENSION on a timing belt for a Volkswagen AEG or AVH 2.0L SOHC engine (98-05 Jetta, Golf, GTI or Beetle).

Most YouTube videos do not show how to set the tension!!!

is a 2.0 jetta MANUAL a good car to get, i see abundance of reviews about possible electrical problems, however more' over i am looking for a good stylish gas saver. i don't see many bad reviews about the engine, but the autotransmission is more than likely a no-go

not a bad video at all, did love the fact you went into detail with the tensioner, i see what you were talking about got my belt on and just trying to figure out why everytime i get belt on with both cam and crank both on tdc and spin cam one full rotation why the crank is always 1 tooth short of tdc yet is i spin it a 3rd time both cam and crank are dead on, kinda got me scratching and or beating my brain lol, 1st non american car ive ever owned and well so far experience with it im not liking havent eve driven the car yet, have a strong feeling when i start driving it im just going back to what ive always had and loved fords lol never had a single issue with any ford ive ever owned. all in all gr8 video buddy anyone who dont understand what your saying or doing should watch the video a couple times, its easy to get lost trying to take all the info in at once lol.

Um, why are so many of these videos saying theres no mark on the crank to check TDC like there is on the cam gear/valve cover and flywheel/trans case. There's a clear notch on the crank pulley (for the serpentine belt) and an indentation mark on the lowest timing cover it lines up with to show TDC. You set it before you remove the pulley. I always set TDC before removing anything as to ensure the belt orientation upon starting removal of timing components.

I did a 2000 New Beetle 2.0 timing kit and followed the same procedure as you did, naturally it was a success and i had no problems with the engine. The 2.0 consumes more oil than the 1,8T but it is more reliable in my experience. Thank you for putting this video out, you probably saved a good number of engines from becoming junk.

I'm an electrician and being absolutely right when working on electrical components is absolutely essential. Yikes…. So many nasty comments. I for one, don't know jack about any of this. It's why I'm here. The tensioning addendum was needed and appreciated. Thanks for sharing the expertise and going through the effort. I'll be adding it to my toolbox of research and hope to someday tackle this before a) my belt fails or b) I get so nervous about 'a' that I drop a grand at the dealership to have it changed.

these engines valves bend if the belt snaps? or is there a way to pull over before destroying everything? pretty sure i had a mk3 gti belt snap and I neutraled to suitable spot and swapped belt on the spot.

They (VW) and all after market parts should have just put a grenade style pin on the tensioner. Bolt it in, pull the pin, done. Common sense.

There is an indicator for the crank. There is an indentationon the lower timing cover that you line up with a notch in the crankshaft aux. belt pulley.

This is the only video in the entire YouTube video collection that guides timing belt change for a VW engine resembling my own car. See I own a Passat B5.5 with engine code AZM. A 2.0L petrol naturally aspirate engine.
