Why Do Toyota Water Pumps Leak? How to Prevent Them From Leaking?

A Toyota Master Diagnostic Technician Explains why do Toyota water pumps leak and how to prevent them from leaking prematurely.

In this video we take a look at Toyota and Lexus water pumps and common causes for leaks while we take apart another leaking water pump on this prestine low mileage 2007 Lexus LS460.

The super long life coolant just like the long engine oil change intervals can be a heavily debated subject. however it doesn’t need to be.

Change your engine coolant every 50k miles or 5 years and you significantly reduce the chances of leaks caused by acidic coolant.

At just over ten years old and about 100K, my '09 LS radiator cracked at the exact same spot. I purchased a Denso (OEM) radiator online…currently $180 shipped. For a relatively modern Lexus, I was surprised how "easy" it was to replace. If you've never worked on a car or replaced a radiator, don't make it your first job. Otherwise, it is not difficult. I didn't get a radiator with a bigger overflow outlet nor did I replace the hose to the overflow tank. However, if it lasts another 10 years and 100K, I'm good with that.

After watching this video, I will probably replace my water pump and drive belt also preemptively before it starts leaking. After 13 years and well over 100K, it's just a matter or time. AMD, you should talk about Toyota FIPG products and which to use for which jobs. Also, if you're talking about something you covered in more detail in a previous video, it's always great to mention it and possibly provide a link. I've seen a lot of your videos but not all.

As a selfish owner of one, keep the LS videos coming. Thank you for your excellent videos and God bless you and your family AMD.

My old 2002 Yaris i had for 13yrs i used Prestone & changed it every 4yrs with no issues. I prefer 4yrs than 5 or 6 yrs. We all make mistakes Amd on cars fella with the odd break when working on cars.

Louis Ax says:

Had a 08 Sienna, luckily the pump failed months before the 3 year warranty expired. That new one lasted 3 years (40k miles) then failed, that's when i knew that they were defective from origin. I bought a good quality brand pump and lasted more than 6 years until i sold the car. You can't expect people to trust OEM when parts failed so prematurely.

I have a question
In previous videos it was suggested to change coolant for the first time at 5 years or 100000miles, after that every 5 years or 50000 miles

Dale Prillaman says:

If doing a 1st Coolant Replacement after, say, 14-15 years/85-95K and fully flushing block w/ distilled, using Block petcocks for completeness is a PITB
My original Coolant was in amazing shape still and hoses not cracked nor swollen in least. Also have new DENSO radiator for TB Kit job at about 150-175K. Since new, my 2006 Tundra 4X4 CC LTD has only encountered some multiple hour long idling and 10-40 mile long Commuter stop and go but otherwise is babyed(sic), hence my determination not to fret about 100K TB Kit Change.
Only commenting for those DIYers that don't have an excellent honest Knowledgeable Mechanic such as yourself or are too broke to afford it!
Really hope it helps someone who has also been negligent on relatively easy maintenance jobs.
Keep those Oil Changes at 5K/6 months is another Engine Super Big, as I learned. Don't buy into HighMileage 10-20K Labels. Unless you exclusively drive Highway which is most efficient for long life undamaged.
Have a Beautiful Labor Day AMD!

Found the Oil Cooler hose was next lowest point.
Then retightened hoses and fully filled/burped with Distilled Water, ran a couple hours/days.
Repeat full drain(not using block petcocks).
Added every accessible coolant hose new(except under intake/have & will change out at Timing Belt Kit job) and filled EXACT CAPACITY of new Toyota Pink.
Which told me it WAS a Full Flush!

I don't like it when engines are covered in plastic like that.

daytonpyro says:

great as always. i would still like to see the actual repairs being done. not sped up.30 min or 3 hours, thanks

Anthony D says:

If you had one of the air operated vacuum coolant changers would you use it? On this specific vehicle and Toyota vehicles in general?

My Life Thai says:

I replace my water pumps every 100,000 as part of my maintenace schedule. $76 doing it myself during the summer is better than the last time that I had to pay $407 to have mine replaced, because it was -40 F and I don't have a heated shop.

Tony Lam says:

The Lexus water pump failure I will classify in this case as a factory workmanship defect. Very often, poor workmanship will last well after the warranty expire. One of the factors that determine when to change coolant is how many heating and cooling cycles the engine had. Toyota have a team of engineers just to determine things like fluid change intervals, they work with fluid makers. So, you are basically telling us all you know more than Toyota who designed the car, and companies like Prestone?! Same with oil changes, American cars for at least 25 years have a service interval of 7500 miles. I think that is long enough to be proven. But you determine we should trow that spec out the window , and even when Toyota specified Synthic oil, you recommend a more frequent change interval, and you blame this one case in your shop with the engine burning oil with not enough changes. I said to you before, in my town, Toronto, 1/2 the taxis are Camrys, and they are universally poorly maintained. I also noticed you did not say much about regular service and severe service. So why go with your recommendation, how about we change at every 5000 miles, eh the coolant ! and 2500 miles with the oil ? Do the tranny same time as the coolant. Someone have to produce more dirty oil to recycle. Maybe you should talk every customer to have the AC leak checked as well, why should it be just Benz, BMW or Bentleys have a minimum shop charge of $1000 every time the car get into a shop.
