A Toyota master diagnostic explains Toyota Trucks sealed transmission fluid replacement WITHOUT a scan tool using the Fluid temperature check mode built in most Toyota trucks with overflow type transmissions.
In this video we revisit the Toyota sealed transmission fluid replacement procedure without a scan tool.
Many folks dislike the dipstick less Toyota transmissions. And while a dipstick is much easier, once you watch this video and practice the procedure you’ll realize how easy it is to do this. You’ll need very basic tools, some time to practice the procedure and a bigger wallet to carry the cash you save from paying a shop to do this!
I always recommend that you use Toyota original fluid. Almost all Toyota and Lexus sealed transmissions use Toyota WS ATF fluid. Some of them will say Life Time fluid. That from experience is not very accurate and some of these transmissions start having issues as they age and have more miles. Play it safe and change this fluid every 60,000 miles or 6 years.
The tools you’ll need for this job :
– 14mm socket
-5mm hex socket
-small piece of wire
-graduated bucket or pan to capture the fluid and measure it.
-fluid transfer pump
Most Toyota and Lexus trucks are high off the ground enough where most folks will be able to do this without lifting the truck. However if you need to lift it make sure it’s on a level surface and all 4 corners of the truck are lifted to make sure the level is accurate.
On Sequoia, Tundra and LX570 models don’t forget to bypass the external transmission cooler thermostat if equipped!

Do this job right and check the fluid level, I don’t recommend you use the temp gun method as I explained in the video because it’s highly inaccurate in Toyota trucks.

Hello sir, I have a 2020 Tacoma sr 2.7 l4 with 30k , I watched a video from “the bass clef” showing a way to get truck into a temp mode without the jump wire, I was wondering if this is a reliable way to get temp reading for the level check. On transmission? Thank you for your input, god bless !!
Tried this on my 2015 Tundra SR5 with 5.7L, made a jumper and connected pin #4 to #13 as shown in video. Started my truck cycled transmission through R, D, S, and back to park. Then shifted from N to D many times well over 10 times. Many different lights flashed, but it never displayed D or A/T temp display!
I’ll either go to dealer for service or purchase a scan tool.
Just bought a 2012 Tacoma PreRunner with 90k miles. No record of transmission service. So just a drain and fill now and another at 150k? Or is there a more recommended method? Awesome videos!

I went through like 4 other videos and stopped watching them because I knew they were leaving some things out or doing it wrong based on things Iv heard. This dude broke it down perfectly, didn’t leave out a single step. There are several videos on this where they don’t even mention the paper clip for the cooler!! And use the laser stupid ass method and honestly likely don’t even know about the shift / OB jumper method.

Lovely tutorial, for all vehicles with the A750, but you did not mention anything about TCM reset each time you do the fluid change.
do you not see vehicles having erratic gear changes if the memory is not reset after fluid change because of the different characteristics from old fluid to fresh new fluid?

i have 2013 tacoma. I plan on using a scanner for the temperature reading instead of the jumper. Something is unclear…Do i still need to do the shifting (D to N several times for the D light to come on) if im using a scanner to tell me the proper temp?

I had a wreck in my 05 Tundra. I had it towed to a Toyota dealer because it was over a weekend. I had an Independent Toyota Master facility, but they were closed. The dealer had some apprentice do the service and he wasn't trained properly on that the fluid had to be driving temp and didn't know about the inspection plug and how to use it. Bottom line I started driving it and the transmission started slipping. I drove down to MY independent Toyota trained tech and he said I bet the dealer didn't service it correctly. He drove it enough to warm it up and then inspected the level. Its about 2 quarts low! He corrected the problem and then he got the dealer service manager and ripped him a new one for NOT TRAINING his people correctly. A new transmission at the time was around $5K. Thanks to Robert for handling that whole issue foe me! It's doing fine many miles later!
Toyota dealership had advised from getting transmission fluid chaged on 2015 Rav 4 shield transmission. Is it too late to get the fluid change at 250k?
