This is a good video. I’ve had the same problem and have fixed it. Those “510” ohm resistors get too hot. I am thinking about replacing for “barrel” type resistors next time. Seems other manufacturers such as Ford use the same type or brand of LED display and have the same issue. They should engineer these better. It’s still cheaper to fix yourself than going to the dealer, at least on the display issue.
This fixed my overhead console display…2008 Tacoma. Perfect.

I spent $15 and the circuit board is rather small in architecture. It will look exactly like in the video and he CLEARLY shows the resistor (510) CLEARLY marked on it. You sound too unsure and accusing. This isn’t pulling a carburetor apart, it’s rubbing some solder with a hot point to melt the solder and reform the connection to complete the circuit.
If you aren’t sure, don’t be this guy here.
Thanks Mike, just pulled mine out and rubbed the soldering gun against the contacts on the resistors and it works perfect now! ’06 Tacoma here.
If you think you are too dumb to do this, you can. Pay $15 for a soldering iron and save yourself the cash and time of taking it into a shop.
Thanks for the great information! Mine has been out for a few weeks and I was contemplating taking it to the dealer for repair, until I saw this video. Took mine apart as shown and sure enough, the 510 resistor was at a 45 degree angle attached on one side. soldered it back on and it works like normal. Thanks for saving me a crapload of money!
Mine has been out since 2008. I just checked it, and sure as shit, its the bottom 510.

Well, the dealership typically wants to replace the entire unit since it easier, faster, they know the new piece works….and yes, they make more money. It’s in their best interest to do so since the Mechanics aren’t electronic technicians are probably not “qualified” by Toyota to solder parts. If it was still under warranty I would expect a new board and not just a soldered part. That being said, that’s why I did the video. It’s an easy fix, you can do it yourself for FREE! 🙂
Toyota Dealership charged me $50 to tell me it was broken! Duh..I told them that and that there was a loose connection before they touched it…then they told me $289 to replace the unit! I knew there was stuff online about this, how come the Toyota dealer doesn’t seem to know what is wrong?? RIP OFF!! Thanks for the info on the repairs guys!!! Now if I could only solder…

Great news! I haven’t look at the circuit closely but I suspect those resistors are part of the power supply circuit. They appear to get VERY hot and can’t dissipate the heat due to being undersized and not in a ventilated area. They get so hot they crack/blow/pop off. For a permanent fix I would swap it out for larger resistors.
Boy, I just fixed mine using my solder (tip dont put too much or you will burn the chip). My question is why did it break off? thanks for the vlog

Thank you Mike! I just fixed my 2008 Tacoma, sure enough one of the 510’s had a hairline crack underneath the solder, could only see under a magnifying glass. I did the refloat on the solder and it’s working again. Thanks for saving us money.

I need to go to take a course of electronic assembly the circus board in order to do this job and need to buy solder gun??!! Too much money and time for me..So I bring to mechanic..for $40 to SAVE me time and money….I had only 1 occupation to work and to live and some time you must pay for somebody else to do your “jobs” ( too bad BUT..in this case OK to me

Great! Mine stopped working for almost a year. While it was in for servicing they wanted huge coin to replace the unit. I looked on a few Toyota forums and a few people had described what the issue could be a. I took it apart and my 510 resistors weren’t off.. but the solder joints were “cold” Re-flowing the joint fixed my issue. I was PO’d that the dealer wanted so much a simple fix.. I made the video!
Another success here! This is one of those nagging things that goes wrong but isn’t quite annoying enough to deal with – until now. As soon as I saw your video, I thought, “I could do that”. Be sure to keep track of the two little snap clips. BTW, how did you know which resistors to target? Thanks Mike.

Mine stopped working a few weeks ago. Found your video, took the unit out, and the “ole 510” chip was completely off , found it in the bottom of the housing, lined it up where it was originally situated, hit it with solder, hooked it up and it seems to work fine….YA!!!
Mine went out about a year ago. Haven’t taken the time to fix. Gonna try this out.

I hit the circuit board with my wife’s stained glass soldering iron “saying yeah right, but who cares let’s try it’s broken anyway”…Mike you are the man! Yes it worked!!! Thanx Mike!! Lucky for me I know how to solder and I just have to buy a T10 Torx Screw just under $7.00……
This fixed my issue but be careful taking the black cover off. The plastic clips are flimsy and the display console has two metal clips be careful to not lose them when pulling the temperature console off.

My temp gauge gave out a week ago. I have 116,000 miles on her and just as you said my bottom 510 resistor was hanging down slightly once I took it apart. I solderer it back on and put it back together. I had to add a little solder to it but it works perfect!!! Thanks man. Much love in the USA!!! My Toyota Tacoma is the best vehicle I have ever own and its Toyota owners like you that help us carry on and not spend a fortune. you sir are my hero. take care.

After a year, I had to re-solder this again this morning. The resistors get over heat over due to a design flaw. Time to turn this feature off!
this worked great. it was exactly what you said it would probably be, the 510 restrictor. in my particular instance the lower of the two 510s was actually hanging off on one side, bent out at a 45 degree angle. thank you
