TOYOTA TACOMA CV FRONT AXLE REPLACEMENT | SR5 4WD CV Shaft Repair

TOYOTA TACOMA CV FRONT AXLE REPLACEMENT | SR5 4WD CV Shaft Repair

We had a small repair job to do on my brother’s 2005 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4×4. The sway bar end link came loose from the steering knuckle and swung down and destroyed the rubber boot on the front CV axle shaft. In this video, he and I show you how to remove and install a new CV shaft. We also demonstrate how to install new sway bar endllinks into the Tacoma.

I can't seem to put the new seal in the transmission case. I used a 2×4 cut in a perfect cycle and used a hammer to try to tap it in bit i could not get it to go in. It would always shift to ine side or another. Any thought ls or suggesntions?

Tom Digiambatista says:

thank you. that helped me alot. the only thing i wish you said was to keep repositioning the old shaft and pull on it (pry it) until that inside clip drops or something so it comes out….mine was impossible to pull untill i rotated the axle several times and at each time stopping, tried to pry the old one out…..

Hey guy, thank you so much for this video! Had to replace the CV axle on my 2005 Lexus GX470, it is the exact same process. Your video worked step by step, same size took as well!

Did you have to add any oil/fluid to the differential itself?

john doe says:

if you leave the nut on the end of the shaft and hit the nut you won't damage the threads

Martin Sayers says:

How were you holding the wheel still while taking off the axle nut? Did you have someone on the brakes? Thanks! Otherwise video super helpful!

good instruction, but 480p is poor video.

masterkey1950 says:

The torque specification for the big axle nut is 217 ft/lb. BTW, not necessary to separate the steering tie rod end, stay bar link or the brake caliper.

What is your guess on price if a shop just changed out the CV boots? One of mine is torn on the drivers side. 1999 Tacoma. Thanks.

Great video! You wouldn't happen to recall the size of the bolts on the LCA and the allen on the Sway bar link would you? Didn't catch it in the video. Thanks!

Hey guys, Just did this install this weekend and after fighting the c-clip everything went back together perfectly. Unfortunately now I am hearing a squeak/scrape? Thinking it could be the plate behind the brake drum but not sure. Anyone else have this type of issue at all? Thanks

xjoverkill says:

I was always questioning that retaining clip on the inner cv shaft, now that I know its self retained design im not so scared to tackle the inner clamshell needle bearing removal and east coast gear supply bushing install.  Thanks for making this video!!!
