Johnny Rocket says:

What would you say is the big reason for people buying this car?? Is it because they think its good for the enviroment or they save so much money on fuel?

sg1969camaro says:

i love how he’s not wearing shoes! i guess if your gonna get a shock, might as well go all out

SpiderWebUntangled says:

You disconnect the negative terminal of the AUX battery in case your wrench touches the body of the car it will not short out the AUX battery. If you remove the positive terminal and your wrench touches the body or chassis or any metal of any type of vehicle, you will create a nice fireworks show, weld the tool to the metal and blow up a battery bomb in your face.

gokartbuyer says:

damn right!

pocumtuc1972 says:

As been said so many times already… Thank you SO MUCH, Mr. Smith. Your explanation and sequencing are outstanding. This job became much easier for me because of your efforts !

saleem83 says:

Well all ur gas savings out the door. Ill keep my 400,000 miles tahoe. It owes me nothing. Original everyrhing

samcolt45 says:

Great video. I truly thank you for taking the time to do this.

Coolride17 says:

I can see it wasn’t working correctly by the 36mpg with 200 miles since reset. Mine gets about 47, you must of been on engine more than anything else.

Rory Johnston says:

Thank you, this video is excellent. Followed your guide, took my battery out. Local Toyota dealership wanted £2,000 to replace the whole battery. Instead I spent £25 for a new cell, plus £4 for a cheap multimeter – now all fixed!

Joe A says:

Hi,this is Joe from Prius Hybrid Battery Rebuild Texas,
Please be very careful!!!!!! this battery can kill you in a second!!!! also do not think the battery is safe to be around just because you unplugged the Orange High Voltage plug? wrong if you think that way !!! what you maybe don’t know is the high voltage still exist through the bus bar and it just waiting for any mistake !!!!! so please be extremely careful when you are around or dealing with any HV hybrid battery ..
again Be Safe !!

Powell Smith says:

I’m glad I could help. It’s still running strong without any issues!

Powell Smith says:

Glad I could help Possum. Let us know how the used battery works out for you. How many miles do you have on it so far?

Possum Finkelstein says:

Mr Smith.. I can’t say THANK YOU loud enough! You helped save me THOU$AND$. I swear I’d buy you a fine steak dinner and give you a big ole kiss on the head if you were here in front of me right now. Your video was great! I just did the entire job in a little under 5 hrs. I guarantee it would have taken me twice as long without the benefit of viewing your video beforehand (it certainly helps to know where all the secret bolts, clips, etc are located). I bought a battery out of a wreck for $725

Powell Smith says:

I think there is also a time length on the warranty that could cause it to expire before 100k miles.

Powell Smith says:

Cool. If you end up doing it, please post a link here to the writeup!! I saw a Prius pickup truck made from a wrecked Gen II prius. He cut the roof off and stripped out the back to make it into a pickup bed.

Powell Smith says:

You have more patience than I do. I would go crazy looking at all of those warning lights while driving. 🙂 My wife definitely wouldn’t go for it when she’s driving.

Jeff Jones says:

I am in CA and have about 130k on mine now, wife loves the car, i really don’t but that’s OK. I was thinking about using the motor for a wind generator with the motor backup for an off grid install. Just have to “hack” the system or what to get it to work, maybe a prius touch screen for the house to see what’s going on 🙂 cool i will check craigslist

Stephen Best says:

most states cover warranty to 100k but a few states like CA cover to 150k.

trangenusa says:

search Craigslist Phoenix AZ Cars, and search for this? W. Corrine Dr. at 67th Ave & Cactus, his phone number is listed. tell him another Craigslist person interested in his Prius referred you

trangenusa says:

Yeah, that’s what he said, he flips Prius in the Phoenix AZ area, and runs a Prius Taxi company I think.

Jeff Jones says:

the engine and trans for 500, he will sell one for 500 dollars? if so i would like to buy one.

electrictroy2010 says:

Well, well….. Toyota claimed the battery never needed replaced & would easily last longer than 300,000 miles. I guess they lied
.

electrictroy2010 says:

Wow rather than do all this work, I’d just keep driving the car with the warning lights. In my book as long as the car still moves, it still works.

jrn103 says:

thank u Mr. Smith on the video. My question is i got a 2006 prius w/108,000 mileage. And all the xmas lights came on just like in your car. Check diagnostic, say replace hybrid battery pack. Is it possible the battery is already dead w/only that mileage. And good thing u said clean the vent, coz we have dogs. By any chance do u know the mileage warranty for the battery pack. need help.

Powell Smith says:

That’s good information. I don’t have the proper equipment to deal with high voltage systems so I didn’t want to take the battery pack apart. Without proper lineman’s gloves and tools, you can kill yourself with the voltage in the pack. My take is that servicing the battery pack and replacing individual cells is out of the range of most shadetree home DIY mechanics. I left it up to the reman shops to do that for me. (it was worth the extra cash to avoid a Darwin moment) 🙂

Powell Smith says:

I’m glad I could help! I have 153k miles on the reman battery now with no issues. I hope it keeps lasting for a few more years.

trangenusa says:

I’m in Phoenix AZ, area, I was researching and talking to this guy who ran Prius Taxi business, he said, when ever 2+ cells are damaged, dash will light up. so just replace those two bad ones, test each of 28 cells. They don’t all fail at same time. He’s had one Prius go 900,000 miles, and he has NEW gas engines and trans for $500, He only replaces bad cells, never whole pack. and they fail in TWO’s or more, but never more than 3-4 at a time. The 900k he’s only replaced 8 cells each at 200k time

trangenusa says:

Most Excellent, Thank you so much! You Rock dude.

edward esquivel says:

I love youtube its going to make the Toyota dealerships go out of business.. LOL

Powell Smith says:

Yeah, it sounds like you’re getting close. You may want to try cleaning the cooling fan now. It’s less effort than getting to the battery and it will definitely improve its cooling of the battery if yours is as dirty as mine was.

Powell Smith says:

Sure thing. I’m glad it was helpful. See my comments above about buying on eBay.

Powell Smith says:

Yeah, I was worried about that too and I did have a few bumps with damaged shipping on the first battery. However, I did call and talk to the company before buying and did some research on others that used them as well. I don’t recommend buying a reman battery blindly on eBay. Make sure you are buying from a reputable company!

Powell Smith says:

Thanks for the comments. I like raw video best showing all of the mistakes. Sometimes knowing the common mistakes in advance is more helpful than the actual steps!

Powell Smith says:

Your welcome. I bet it was the safety plug. I had trouble with it seating properly and spent some time making sure it was completely locked in place.

Powell Smith says:

Thanks so much for the kudos!

Powell Smith says:

Sure. I’m glad it was helpful!

Powell Smith says:

I’m glad it was helpful. I looked for a good tutorial for this before I started and couldn’t find one that walked me through the whole process so I made it myself from start to finish.

wayne21williams says:

Mr smith excellent video i was scared to work on my Lexus hybrid but it seems so easy Toyota/Lexus are good cars i really don’t want to get rid of my GS450H when the battery goes bad 5 thumbs up on this review man!!!

funkyphone says:

I have 2004 Man I don’t know how to tell you thank you so so much Excellent video I’ll follow all the steps I get it done myself I just had a little bit of problem at the end turn the car on came out to be hot plug was not plugged all the way but is running good thank you

Kawa Halmat says:

This was so well explained 🙂 Thank you so much Mr. Smith, this saved me so much money.
You are a life saver, sure appreciate it Sir.
