Toyota hood won’t close How to fix it and most other car hoods

How to fix a car hood that won’t close. In this case, a 25-year-old Toyota Corolla. In most cases, the problem is the cable or wire that locks the hood is dirty or corroded on the hood end and the cable spring is not strong enough to pull the cable through the tube or hose to lock the hood down. In the last I could just jiggle the latch under the dashboard and it would loosen the cable enough to engage the lock. Today it was stuck open and I had to open the hood and push the spring to allow it to lock the hood. I added some lubricant and will add some later and it should start behaving better.

Thank you soon much for sharing that information! You saved us not only time to take it to a shop, (it's our only car) but our budget as well! Again, thanks

My '02 Celica GT had this issue. The hood won't go down all the way and I can't move the latch piece that should lock it in place at all. The lever inside the car doesn't do anything and just feels like nothing is connected to it. Do you think I just need a new cable?

Sir, you are a genius. I wish I had seen this video before purchasing a new latch.

Fluid checks are a must. Basic checks help.

Sgt. SLaughter says:

It works! I had the same problem with my daughters car. Spray some WD-40 or better yet penetrating oil on the hood latch and work the latch parts back and forth. Great advice, thanks!!

If only more people would open the hood and check fluids they would be able to successfully drive a 25yr old car.
