The 2AR-FE 2.5L 4 cylinder engine is a very popular engine in many Toyota and Lexus models. However lately it has been developing an issue with oil consumption especially the early version of this engine.

In this video we have a beautiful 2011 Toyota RAV4 with just over 150,000 miles that has developed severe oil consumption.

I have 2 of the 2AR engines in the fleet, one at 100k miles and the second one at 190k miles, neither burn any oil and see 5k oil changes

If buying used, always check tailpipe for oily residue to confirm oil consumption issues

F165 says:

So not all Toyota engines are great. My 2004 Trailblazer 4.2 inline 6 has 188k miles and doesn’t use any oil.

Thank you for being the technician I strive to be daily. Ethical, honest, do it right the first time or don't do it. I've grown a following of very loyal customers. It does benefit everyone in the long term. Kudos!

Puny Green Man says:

Respect. This is really very difficult work. I know about doing this same thing on 100/150/180 cc single cylinder Bajaj motorbikes. Engine overhaul is such a demanding, high focus and disciplined job. Very few have the knowledge and the patience to do this properly.

Paul Pierce says:

Get an electric A-Frame or trolley overhead hoist instead of a cherry picker. After watching you with 4 guys, its the only way to go. 35 years pulling and rebuilding heavy duty truck engines, it a time saver and pretty much a one man job. Really enjoy your Toyota information. Thanks.

Mr Malicious44 says:

The 1zz-fe in the Corolla is also awful with burning oil

oldz70 says:

my kid's mom's 2005 camry with the 2.4 burns oil every 1500-2000 miles and it doesn't even have a lot of miles. it doesn't smoke, the tailpipe isn't nasty with oil so i don't know what the problem is. the vvt gear rattles also, which according to all the info i've seen, isn't or wasn't a problem in this year but the later years like this.

foryoutocool says:

What is normal Psi compression test number for this engine. Please help.

Thomas Meadows says:

I use mobile. 0w 20 since I have 100,000 mi on it. Little over a hundred thousand miles I used high-mileage mobile one. Is there anything better to use.

Thomas Meadows says:

Now I ask myself. I have a 2015 RAV4 XLE. It's a little over 100,000. Should I have bought a CRV. Honda 2.4. When these problems come up later on. And you've done your research prior. What the heck

Thomas Meadows says:

I have the 2015 RAV4. XLE just over. 100000 miles. I thought it used from the Toyota dealership with 55,000. I have changed the oil. Ever 5 to 4,000. I checked the dipstick and this all dirty quick. Within three thousand miles. I don't like synthetic oils.
