Never Seen a Belt do THIS Before…(Toyota)

The owner of this 2007 Corolla said that when she drives through a puddle, the power steering cuts out and the Check Engine light comes on!
After restarting the car the problem goes away until the next puddle. WEIRD!

Let’s see if we can recreate the customer complaint and fix the problem.
Some parts may be required.

I actually thought the belt was not only worn, but maybe routed incorrectly around the crankshaft pulley.

Your a pretty smart dude young Ivan

Man that pisses me off so much. The last and hopefully final time I ever used a mechanic he tossed my splash guard out! It guarded my oil filter housing. He also tore out the splash guard in the wheel wells which is total lazy hack. I understand it makes your job a little harder to work around that stuff or have to put something back but for 100 an hour that's total crap

I just recently learned something interesting about serpentine belts. I'm not going to claim it to be true of all belts, but I do think there is a basic standard of classification between these belts and the relationship to the "Item Number". Belts are classified I am sure by many different parameters designating length, width, number of notch-v's in the belt, etc.
I was recently introduced to a problem where the person replacing the belt used a belt that was "2 Numbers" different from the original. So happens, those two numbers were length. They replaced a 17" belt with a 19" belt. Like a part number A-17YP5 … with an A-19YP5…
Close enough I guess…. I chased that issue for 6 or 7 years…. caused just such an intermittent problem…. beyond belief….
RULE: Replace by Manufactures PN, not by stamp on bad part.

I think the alternator needs more water…looks too dry.

I had a Sears Craftsman air compressor with a serpentine belt and as the compressor built up pressure the belt would start to slip. I thought the compressor was seizing up. Took me a while to finally figure out that the belt was just worn out

I have seen the same problem due to missing bottom cover shield on Dodge Caravan (3.3L v6). I am going to order Dayco belt gauge for myself. Thanks Ivan!

I have a personal car that does that, it gets water on it every once in a while and slips. I cannot find the exact guard. So I just try avoiding it by slowing down over them. It only does it when you splatter water that is fairly deep anyway, so you should slow down over it to begin with. But otherwise it's a great car, almost 300k and original tranny+motor, &rack. Yes the rack leaks, and the motor is starting to leak coolant in the intake gaskets, but to me these days. Anything that goes well over 100k is a good car. People always talk about how long a vehicle last after they've replaced half the drivetrain. But the drivetrain is what your mileage is counting on so to see even part of it still intact is impressive sometimes. By the way your videos are great and appreciate the effort involved in some of them because I have been there dozens of times. Including customers cars so I appreciate the ability to show others your adventures.

I do problems sometimes on my truck 2011 ranger 2.3L. ALT slippery belt for 2-4 sec if I hit flood water. I did put water hose to test if my ALT belt slippery I don’t see slippery. but my city water “ hard water”. And raining is soft water. My ALT won’t alert light unless volt drop less than 10 v.

Mower Moddin says:

Had it happen to my Camry, I changed out the belt and the problem never came back.
