I hate when these shops don't do what they say they did. Gives all mechanics a bad name.

Hunter Johnson says:

I would caution that aftermarket passenger lower ballpoint. I would put an oem in its place. The aftermarket ones are known to fail without warning!

Awesome video

youngb1ood says:

This would only happen on double wishbone suspension because the load bearing is on the ball joints. The lower one takes most of the wear followed closely by the upper one. Strut suspension is not catastrophic as there is only a lower ball joint which is stronger and the lower control arm tends to be beefier. The strut and spring becomes load bearing in strut suspension. This catastrophic thing happens mostly on the front end of pickup trucks/SUVs and older Honda’s.

Glenn Brooks says:

This site could break my heart seeing the older trucks. My first Toyota was a new 1985, new 91 and a year later a new 92 4×4 . Best truck of my life was the 4×4 92. Then I left for a while and while my Chev was down bought a used 2005 4×4 standard. Then a new 4×4 2010 and some years later a used 4×4 12 k miles 2012. The best was the 92 but the 2012 will be run to the ground. Plus 4 corollas. Current Corolla is a 2012.

Steve Eaton says:

I had a 96 Taco (2nd owner) and loved that truck! Toyota claimed that the rusty frame recall/buyout was needed. They gave me a check for 3x it's value and I used the $ to buy a used Dakota. Big mistake! Four yrs later, I bought an 06 Tundra with a newer frame (2014) and my shop guys went over it like you do. It passed the inspection and I love that truck and still driving it today! Toyota forever…..lesson learned!

Andrew Villanueva says:

Wow I hate repair stops like that. I was so scammed by this one shop. They cost me thousands in repair bill. Found out they charged me almost triple the price on all the parts. They even charged me 50.00 to hook up a wire. Never again will that happen l got a obd2 scanner and scan my cars every three I have check engine light. Now I have a awesome mechanic who is honest about repairs.

Hi frand thank you for making videos again. Been missing a lot of time with you lately. I much prefer you tell the stories than the owner guests. We are here for your style of storytelling. This is insane. 2k repairs on a 7k truck. One wonders if they ripped them off more than just the flush. Maybe the rack didn't even need changing.. I wonder if because of how busy you were, if you were able to get them in sooner, they might not have had that accident.. 280k? Sounds low because looks like they use it! Maybe more like 333k!!

greedy gringo prospecting says:

never had that problem. and i have driven a two wheel drive for years.

It's mostly Tacomas on this channel, so it's time to rename it to "Tacoma Maintenance."

N TNE says:

my 4runner is difficult to shift/move into gear but it eventually does. also it go into neutral from drive while driving. 05’ v6 u.s. model limited 187k. mi. your help is appreciated

NWdude says:

Before even watching, I'm guessing LBJs.

Matthew Flaherty says:

@toyotamaintenance where are ya located? I have a tundra I would like you to look over if possible

Steven Bauer says:

On 1st gen Tacomas (96-04) and 3rd Gen 4Runners, the Lower Ball Joint is the more common catastrophic failure because the weight of the vehicle plus the spring pressure on the lower control arm is pulling the two sections of the LBJ (ball and socket) away from each other.. There's much less force on the Upper Ball Joint..

nyunixguru says:

2003 Tacoma lower ball joint busted two times. Once you hear the squeaking better replace

TheBear says:

I have a 1990 hilux diesel, 4runner, Land Cruiser and a 21 Tacoma, but that 96 tacoma 4×4 with that front grill is what I am look to buy next!

An Advice: Aftermarket Lower Ball joints will last 20K miles MAX (with stock height). Those will pop out and it sure will. OEM lower ball joints are the ONLY way to go for easy 200K miles (unlifted)

Happy Garage says:

Actually it’s more common for lower ball joint separation. And judging but the looks of those boots those joints are poor quality 100% chinesium, and will be worn in the near future. Inspect all lower ball joints on those 1st generation Tacoma’s, and 3rd generation 4Runners, any free play at all and replacement is strongly recommended due to separation risk.

HouseCallAutoRepair says:

You can't own one of those for long in the Northeastern States… Unless you take it apart, and get the frame dipped, rust will perforate it in less than a decade.
