Install Toyota Rear Axle Bearing, Oil Seal – WITHOUT a Press!

I’m installing a rear axle bearing + oil seals on my 1985 Toyota Pickup 4×4, without using a press. Most people don’t own a press, so here’s how a little extra elbow grease saved me a lot of money instead of paying a shop to press them on. The rear axle/wheel bearing and oil seal installation is similar on many Toyota trucks and 4 runners, both 2wd and 4wd.

Here’s a kit for the following Toyotas (No ABS)
https://amzn.to/3qtwCCE
1995-97 Toyota Tacoma Rear without ABS Brakes
1998-99 Toyota Tacoma Rear
2000 Toyota Tacoma (Built Before 5/00 Production Date) Rear
1984-00 Toyota 4Runner Rear
1984-89 Toyota Pickup with Single Rear Wheels (SRW) Rear
1969-83 Toyota Pickup Rear
1990-94 Toyota Pickup with Single Rear Wheels (SRW) Rear without ABS Brakes
1995 Toyota Pickup Rear without ABS Brakes
1998 Toyota T100 (Built Before 3/98 Production Date) Rear
1993-97 Toyota T100 Rear
**You’ll also need to add O-Rings: https://amzn.to/3rAsjH4
and Snap Rings: https://amzn.to/30xVhet
as they don’t come with the kit**

If your bearings are ok and you just need the Genuine Toyota 90310-50006 Rear Axle Oil Seal:

In the intro, I thought you called it the "6 BEER Garage" and I thought that was perfect for all of the shade tree mechanics of the world.

You rock! I’ve been looking for a way to save money on a rear disk conversion on my first generation Tundra. Now all I need is a toasted sequoia or FJ rear end for all the parts.

OMFG!!! You are a genius!!! and a glutton for punishment.

Steve Brzosko says:

Very, very clever. I love simple workarounds like this. This should make the process SOOO much easier and less costly.

@6th Gear Garage I know it's been a long time but as of 12/2021 that Amazon link for the rear wheel bearing kit no longer uses Japanese made components. Just got mine and the package says made in China. It's probably fine but just wanted to give you a heads up.

Sim Oliver says:

Did this today (after watching your video again a few times to remind myself of the sequence).
All went ok.
I wrapped the brake plate in a lot of towels where I was gripping it to reduce the impact on my hands and tried to just let it hit the ground rather than pushing it in. It still got to my hands but I wish I'd used all the towels/rags from the start. Mine didn't budge for a while, so heated the bearing retainer and bearing edge with a small propane torch for a while and used an off cut of laminate flooring on top of the concrete floor to get a really strong contact (my 3/4 ply was cushioning it a bit I felt). after a few more tries , success :). Thought I'd add my experience in case it makes it easier for someone.
Thanks again for the run through to show the way.
