How to Kill a "Bulletproof" Toyota? (98 Camry V6 Misfire – Part 1)

This low-mile 1998 Toyota Camry V6 came in with a misfire.
Plug? Wire? Coil? Injector? Guess again…

Doesn’t take long to diagnose the problem, and unfortunately it’s not going to be cheap to repair.

However there is always a silver lining 😉

What's the Best collector ToYoTa car ?? Something cool like my 68 Z/28 Camaro or my 72 Chevelle big block.

mark smith says:

I had an engine with bad compression an burning oil so when I took apart the head I ground all the values as it was better to increase compression numbers while changing out the rubber seals, I also cleaned smooth the in and exit port's for better flow the engine ran better than it did before, I had people asking me for the engine if I ever scrap the body. All my cars get a oil change at the correct time and most had no faults in running, ie overheating to bad oil passage ways. Even flushed the radiator and heater matrix.

Greg McKinney says:

I've run across that when a chuck of hard carbon gets pinned under the valve and acts like a torch to fry the valve.

looking forward to the only supercharged silhouette (ever?) those camry's must be good my sister's mechanic always offered to buy it from her… he never wanted my sunfire lol

chris smith says:

Hi Ivan, working your magic AGAIN!! Many thanks from UK.

John T. says:

I recall some of the early V6 Camrys had an issue with cracked heads and blown gaskets on one bank, they fixed that on later models from memory.

Les Reeves says:

My son had a Diahatsu Charade 92 model 4cyl that spun a bearing at 380,000 klms it was a duel overhead cam motor I plucked that motor out by myself (had all the correct equipment) stripped it down honed the bore recoed the head replaced all the bearings&rings put it back together used new head bolts (they stretch) in my garage at home that brand of car was an off shoot of Toyota ran like new then he blew up the gearbox (manual) couldn't get parts or a used one so it got scrapped.Sad day.

Posh panda says:

proof that low milage is rubbish. A warm motor cruising doesn't go bad..

Jason says:

Love these engines. I live semi-rural and daily drive an old Avalon. It'll take a bit of convincing to change to anything else. If oil changes have been neglected, just check / clean the PCV valve (rear rocker cover). Could well be stuck open or shut.

lee wyton says:

Lee outside Atl. GA, my brother has a 3.? Liter Chrysler Sebring parts shotgun! No one can fix! If you are ever in the area , it would be cool to talk about diagnosis. How to speak with you?

Charlie Lambert says:

Tell me you replaced that belt!

Jonathan S says:

My question would be where did the broken piece go

allison day says:

Can you explain why you break loose every bolt as per torque sequence?

Sandmansa says:

I've never had to tear one of these apart before. They just don't die like that. But yeah. It just goes to show you. Even a legendary indestructible Toyota engine can suffer a catastrophic failure when it's not been properly maintained. Looks like it will be a really decent spare car to have kicking around once it's fixed. Looking forward to part 2.

hightttech says:

I stopped loaning cars to customers in mid 1990's; too much liability with California crybabies.

plushdragon says:

there was a class action lawsuit on those engines for slugging and bad o-rings. there a oil tub that to small on those engines causing engin to slug.

David Pruitt says:

That's an insane amount of varnish on those parts for 100k. They really didn't take care of it. Even with the new valves I don't see this engine lasting much longer without some major repairs.
