You should be able to reach inside the door and pull up on the metal rod or cable that triggers the latch. That should pop it open for you so that you can repair it. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Ginny Harv says:

My handle is not broken, the door seems to be jammed closed. I removed the door panel and it appears as if the handle & locking mechanism are working fine. But the door is jammed closed and I can’t get it open.

garry foster says:

REALLY AWESOME…SIMPLE TO FOLLOW AND DO THIS. I bought their metal part and it is far superior indeed! Thanks Al!

powwying says:

awesome, thanks for the help

Kenneth Howell says:

I watched your video and gave the repair a try. I can only equate it with a miracle. The repair on the handle worked. Thank you very much! You are the best!

You may need to remove the door panel from the inside, reach inside of the door, and pull on the rod or cable that pops the door open. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Tevin Kim says:

How do I open it from the inside if the door can’t open from the outside and there is no visible latch to open from the inside

1aauto says:

HI Amy, We carry the metal handle replacement, but not the trim piece that goes around the handle. Thanks for visiting us on YouTube. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

If you take the access panel off of the inside, you should be able to reach in the door and pull on the rod to open the tailgate so that you can fix it. 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

draksig12 says:

My handle is broken and I am trying to get the tailgate open (have not bought replacement yet) but can not get the gate to open, it seems to be stuck locked, this may be what broke the handle in the first place. any suggestions?

ffdtower1 says:

Great, vid. I tried to order one, but you were out of stock. I had to get one from a competitor , but the video saved me a ton of effort. I will definitely use y’all for my next part order. Thanks so much.

Amy Zink says:

My handle is not broken, but the plastic cover over it has snapped in half, there is also a missing bolt on one side of the snapped plastic piece. Do you sell that replacement part ? I need it in green. Thanks !

20 minutes to replace, the part arrived in two days from 1A auto….Great job 1A Auto!

Jeremiah Wilson says:

Turns out it was a simple fix. I accidentally pulled the tension cable out of its mount and when i attempted to put it back I just slipped it under the mounting bracket instead of putting it into it. I guess it was applying a slight bit of tension which resulted in the lock not releasing on its own. Once I pressed the tension cable into it’s bracket the problem with unlocking has gone away.

1aauto says:

If there’s an actuator on it, you may want to see if it has gone bad.

Jeremiah Wilson says:

So i got the handle replaced no problem, but now the locking mechanism doesnt want to operate on its own. I can climb in and push in on it with a screwdriver and it opens fine, but for whatever reason it won’t do it on its own. Any suggestions?

1aauto says:

You will most likely have to replace the cable. over time it tends to stretch out and have excessive about of play before it releases the latch.

scarlettkatrin says:

I replaced a broken handle with a metal one a couple of years ago, but at the time (and now again!) I had some trouble with the wire actually pulling enough to release the door latch. Any tips for this?

captcal1 says:

thank you…DONE in less than 45 min! Thank you for doing the video!

David Garfinkel says:

I had my lift handle break on my ’99 Sienna. Watched your video, ordered the part (plastic version) for $30 shipped. 45 minutes later my door works great. It would have taken almost as long to have driven back to drop the car off at the shop for the repair not to mention it would probably have been at least $100 plus!

I also appreciated the video. Thank you. It helped me replace the handle in less than 45 minutes.

They should be back in stock in about a week. If you add your email address to the notify me button, we’ll send you an email as soon as they are back in stock. Hope this helps, 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

exmo74 says:

Hey! This part is out of stock. When are you getting more in?

Bradley Yee says:

Mine was the same. You have to remove the handle and panel from the inside then pull on the opener cable and it will pop open. Not as difficult as it sounds. good luck! Be sure to get the metal replacement. I bought a cheap plastic one and it failed, so I ended up getting the metal one and it works better than the original!

1aauto says:

You may need to remove the door panel, so that you can reach inside and pop the latch open with the rod or cable that opens it. Hope this helps you out 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

Great, thanks for the feedback. I”m repairing mine this weekend!

Becky Bechthold says:

Thank you!!!! I purchased the new handle for under $22.00. It took less than 20 minutes to replace!!! Saved me at least $110 for the hour of labor the dealer wanted to charge me, plus the mark-up on the part!!

You are an invaluable resource for all of us, who are capable of the simpler repairs!!

I just changed my hatch handle yesterday. This was as easy and straight forward as the video described. It took me all of 20 minutes. I probably saved over $200 by doing it myself and and about $150 by purchasing the 1AAuto part rather than the inferior Toyota part. The new handle is much more robust and made the way that Toyota should have done it in the fist place. Keep up the good work guys.

Your video was spot on !!!!! If you can change a battery in your car, you can do this. It literally took me 15 minutes, would of been quicker if i could of found my flashlight to help with connecting the cable. Thanks again, you guys will be on my list for auto parts from now on.
