How To Fix a Surging Idle on a 1991 Toyota Pickup

This is a video I created to demonstrate how I fixed my 4X4 1991 Toyota pickup’s surging idle. I had researched what was wrong with my truck and every soluti…

Good tip, I checked mine and it was plugged with caked dirt.

thanks for the schooling. sometimes when the idle is set to high and the foot is on the brake, the idle will go up and down. Not your situation, just thought i would mention it. How did it get clogged with silicon. I just put a rebuilt motor in my 87, I think I will check that part and see what it looks like.

I have that plastic double intake tube if you still need it

xgod777xify says:

Hey mine is doing the same its a 92 corolla standard fuel injection…have any ideas?i tried the TPS sensor but its doing the same and when im driving trying to get at high speed it doesnt want to go faster it hesitates, like if its choked up…let me know if you know what it can be??? Its an EFI stock engine 16 valves

Great vid bud. cracked me up with “…ghetto appearance…” Good job noting the cool engine need or antifreeze spray. Hey, what is the background guitar piece you used for music? Again, good helpful vid, good music. good job.

HEY BRO I HAVE A 1993 TOYOTA TRUCK SAME ENGINE AS YOURS I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM SOMETIMES IT EVEN SHUTS OF SOMETIMES IF IM ATA STOP LIGHT OR IM JUST TRYING TO STOP AND IT REVS UP COUPLE OF TIMES AND THEN SHUTS OF EMBARESSING IM GONNA TRY THAT THOUGH AND IT ALSO BURNS ALOT OF GAS ANY COMMENTS ON THAT?

Linx1er says:

The bro. I have a question. Where u removed the hoses. That one valve on top that sucks in air is it supposed to be open like that?

David Fontenot says:

Great vid bro

great vid, thanks for saving people time and money

My 92 tercel is doing this same thing ! Greatly appreciated!

toastboy92 says:

its always the most simplest things lol yeah my car is surging and also dying at idle. I replaced the IAC and it helped it for a little bit then it started doing it again. Then I cleaned out the throttle body and it helped it for a little bit and now its doing it again. so now im thinking it might be either something like what you just showed us or maby an EGR or the TPS(ive also checked for Vacuum leaks and there is none)

Alright. I’m irritated. My cousin lives in the adjacent room and he just got excellent at attracting girls. He discovered the Master Attraction web page by Jake Ayres (Look in Google). Now I hear him bringing girls back. He’s continually bringing ladies back and I hear it. It’s yucky. If only he had not found that site.

MrHurricaneFloyd says:

I did it in an identical engine. Had orange in it when I got it. Replaced the radiator, replaced the coolant with green. Had to top off the coolant with some of the old but still clean orange. Benn 2 years and no sludging or any corrosion problems.

MrHurricaneFloyd says:

OPs tube rig is risky and can cause loping idle itself.

MrHurricaneFloyd says:

CONT…..Still acts the same. My theory is that a fuel injector is leaking and flooding out one cylinder with residual fuel pressure after a warm soak. Unfortunately I cant afford a new set of injectors to test my theory.

MrHurricaneFloyd says:

I have a different but common idle problem. Truck starts cold fine, cold idle is great, runs smooth. After warming up it has an intermittent miss that goes away under even the smallest amount of throttle. Also, after getting good and warm and I shut it off for between 10 minutes to 2 hours it will lope and chug like crazy until it is driven for about 15 seconds. All sensors have tested out fine, intake tube has zero leaks and all intake gaskets have been replaced and verified to not leak. CONT..

Dude go to rockauto its a online store you could get that elbow cheap.

beejc1128 says:

What he failed to mention is that Coolant line feeds your Idle air control valve, which is mounted under the throttle body. There is another coolant line that runs out back to your T pipe that goes to the back of the water pump. I had this issue and neither line was clogged, but the idle air control valve itself was clogged. The valve is open until the truck warms up letting the engine idle higher. Once the coolant temps rise the valve closes making the idle drop back down.

Appreciate u……

nice 91 u got there, how’s the 22re been for ya? indestructible like most? ^^

techsurfer2010 says:

Great job man…this wasn’t my issue but it helped me figure out what it was. Mine was the idler screw for the AC. It was set way too high

rjsammons1 says:

Hey I tried this on my 1991 due to rapid quick surge. The bolt/plug was not clogged so then I replaced the thermostat and coolant and it still does it…any tips on what to try next? Thanks for your video though!

Virgil Settles says:

never mix colors, they end up making a gel that clogs up the system in any vehicle

giantAsFan says:

Will mixing orange & green coolant harm this truck ?

giantAsFan says:

Great video Mann keep up the great NO COST FIXES I LOVE IT!!!

wifeyguinn says:

Sick my problem was the pcv set up. Thankssss 🙂

Can u add me? Jessica Koon in San Jose

So I find the hose going from thermostat to throttle body?

aneroidbarometer says:

I am so glad that you were able to solve your issue. All my best!

aneroidbarometer says:

Gotta love the Cali rules! I’m glad you were able to solve your problem and hope your motor is running well.

aneroidbarometer says:

The 22RE is the fuel injected four cylinder motor. The 22R is the motor with a carb on it.

aneroidbarometer says:

I am so glad that it helped. Thank you very much for watching!

aneroidbarometer says:

I do.

aneroidbarometer says:

If it is a celica with the 22RE try and locate the thermostat housing. Thanks for watching!
