Delboy’s Garage, Suzuki Bandit, Chain Adjustment. (plus clean and lube).

Easy task this one, not sure it was even worth posting it, but with the amount of badly and even dangerously neglected chains i see on bikes out and about, i…

From a recently-passed-test noob biker on a 650, this video has been
invaluable advice. They don’t teach you this during training and this was a
great guide on how to look after the chain – thanks!

Brett Rudd says:

No sucking eggs here mate my axel nut was welded. I had to do some serious
monkey boy swinging to get the dam thing loose. Horrific! f**cking hernia
by the end. Ive no idea why a so called professional does that…i mean i
understand they dont want the wheel coming off half way down the road for
there insurance. Felt like crushing there head let alone my
bearings…heavan only knows how it wasn’t stripped out. Agreed on torque
del and just mark it.

kd84afc says:

Hello mate, I have an Sv650 and my chain as become slack and I need to
tighten it and this video as helped, But I haven’t got a paddock stand,
this is still doable on the side stand? or is it wise just to run it in a
garage and them do it

blacktest says:

untill watching this i didn’t even consider that i needed to clean my chain
rather than just lube it o_o it was absolutely caked spent 2 hours cleaning
it and well…it’s apparently silver in color which is nice haha thankin
you sir and madame

I’m with calm biker iam new to owning a big bike and I didn’t know how to
do my chain on my yamaha 600 and was getting worried about doing it but
thanks for the info

Søren Made says:

Hi. Lovely channel. Really helps a new-ish vintage biker owner. I just got
myself a new GPZ 1100 from 83. It’s REALLY dirty. I watched a video where
someone used both oil and water based degreaser to clean gunk, dirt and
whatnot off his bike. Is degreaser damaging to an o-ring chain, or can i
use it if i’m careful with lubricating the chain right after washing it
off?

Boudewijn Lips says:

Hey Del, great video but I do not agree how you clean your chain. The way
you do it the chain will be still dirty at the back. I use a divise calt
“kettenmax”. It will clean your chain on all side’s. I use at first with
diesel so that the chain is completley clean, only then I use a “official”
cleaner like S100 to spray out the last dirt and diesel. Only then I lupe
the chain. Gr. from Holland and keep up your great video’s!

Please continue to teach people to suck eggs. I’m brand new to bikes and
it’s all new to me. It’s building the confidence in me to consider
servicing my own bike. Thanks again.

Chris McKee says:

You apologise waaay too much 😀
I was riding along thinking what’s that bloody clicking noise when i stop
accelerating; ahhhh my chains resting on the center stand >< Have to admit, as much as I love my bandit, motorbikes are a complete time suck for maintenance compared to a car. Now I've got a chain to adjust, brakes to clean, front-tyre needs replacing, stupid oxford heated grips need removing (wire with insulation tape, not even connected), New horn (current one sounds like a squirrel farting), new horn I ordered didnt work 😐 And of course more work in general to get parts its nearly always online and with no advice, you can't just nip into an autotyres for new tyres.

grizta30 says:

Hey del, heard a lot of guys say they use paraffin to clean their chain,
whats your thoughts?

James Watts says:

What about the other side of the chain? For me its easy to take the chain
off my bike and let it sit in a drop of petrol in a pan or wd40 or what
ever (Non O ring chain), then scrub it off with a brush :)

Jon George says:

Invaluable video! 🙂 whats the best way of replacing your bandit 1200 chain
& sprockets?

0TheDazzle0 says:

Hi, any tips on loosening the wheel nut? I ended up going to a garage last
time as it was so tight but looks like they’ve tightened it just as much. I
can just about get some movement but nut on the other side is moving
too……..feels like a 2 man job as i can’t hold both sides at the same
time. Makes me a bit concerned that I’ll over or under tighten once I’m
done too!

robert wynn says:

Thanks for the reply, i last rode a bike when i was 19 in 1965 an Ariel
Arrow so this is all new to me, i,m 68 next month and and really enjoying
riding a bike again

mavrik11964 says:

I’ve always been advised to not use WD40 type lubricants/releasers as it
does contain Stoddards solvent(basically white spirit) which wrecks the o/x
rings! My top tip is to use paraffin in a pump spray bottle…

yongcai85 says:

by the way . anything wrong with tightening chain on side stand? i do not
have main stand though +Moonfleet41

Thank you!! trying to find useful maintenance tips for new bikers online is
so hard! it just seems to be the crap copy and pasted everywhere! Please
keep posting these videos!

really helpful video.. thanks

TopperRico says:

Its a shame I didn’t find your tutorial earlier. I wasted money ordering a
proper chain brush so I’ll give that to the misses when it arrives, shes
got gnashers like elephant tusks.

Top video sir :)

Mista Roest says:

Thanks man! nice and clear video!

draybray21 says:

Nice Video for begginers like myself, thanks :)

bendover90 says:

Hey Man, I ride a 2004 Suzuki GS500, a baby bandit basicall, I was
wondering and wishing to clarify

Can I clean the chain with paraffin? I’ve heard a few guys use paraffin oil
Also, how do you adjust the chain with the bike on the centre stand, with,
or without weight over the rear end.

robcig says:

Man, I can’t believe you made such a boring chore interesting…I watched
it from start to finish…well done!

187mattg81 says:

Really sorry to ask more questions.. I’ve ridden for a few days on reserve
and the gauge actually looks correct!! It’s on three bars and the tank
seems to look the same. But when I get to half a tank it only works on
reserve. The mechanic says he doesn’t know, other bikers are saying the
float only effects the gauge. If there was a blockage it wouldn’t wait for
half a tank would it? And seriously if I ever bump into you ill get you a
crate of beer 🙂

Moonfleet41 says:

Either the tyre is too big for the bike, or the back wheel it out of
alignment…

fatherjack55 says:

Hi bud thanks for the advise, all the best!

Moonfleet41 says:

Hi John, no mate, have no video of doing that…and ive never needed to
either… Bandits run lumpy, its quite normal…and specially on
tickover..ive known of guy spend a day faffing about to get them perfect
and purring like a kitten, and two days later they are back to normal, so
unless they are particularly bad and running like shit.. then leave them
alone..some of these jobs are worried over by blokes because they just
‘think they should’ do them…when in fact, it wont make it any better.

Moonfleet41 says:

Hi mate.. no its just the usual wear of discs, they get crud on them and
rub in parts…but its certainly not due to ut being out of line as the
caliper is mounted with the axle through its middle..so if the wheel is
out, it takes the caliper out too so it stays in line….its just and old
disc mate, and some dirt….thanks for watching, Del.

james clark says:

perfect sense. thanks delboy!

dexcz says:

Hi Del, Thanks for this, it clarified a few things for me. I have a
question though, right at the end of the vid, when you’re spinning the
wheel, it sounds like the brake disc is brushing against the pads in one
spot. Doesn’t that mean there’s something not aligned? The wheel or the
disc?

Moonfleet41 says:

Bad news im afraid mate..NO..if you have a rusted jammed link .its a new
chain…yes you can move it about with force, obviously you can..but the
pins in the middle have now corroded, and not just a bit either.enough to
jam solid..so all you’ll do is weaken them, and that can lead to a chain
failure….and that can be phuqing lethal….just get a new chain
buddy…its money well spent..sorry to be bearer of bad tidings, but im
sure you’d prefer the truth…then lube better in future. tc. Del.

Davejavuable says:

Hi Del, are you in the Bandit Owners Club of Great Britain? Thanks for your
great Video’s by the way.

Jim Speir says:

oh , and great vid as usual 🙂

AJ Soulz says:

Hey dude, I have a really important question I hope you can answer.. Have
you ever experienced your chain/sprockets making a really loud clunking
noise? when going along at set speeds like 30/40/50 you can hear it clunk
clunk clunk? Just wondering if you would say its the chain too slack or the
sprockets worn? Cheers!

Moonfleet41 says:

Aaah magic…..do the outside as ive shown, then take a look at the
inside.. it’ll be almost clean, the solvent and rubbing action on the card
board gets all but the worst off.. then just a good thorough wipe with a
cloth gets the last off..
