In this video we fix the loose and flaky paint on a 2007 Chevy duramax. GM has had a bad problem with their paint flaking off their vehicles. Especially the white ones. Now their is no way to fully fix this problem other than to paint the entire pickup. Which is definitely not an option for most people because that can get pretty expensive and usually not worth it.
I'm done with Chevrolet, this has been going on for 30 years.
Why go to all the trouble. DA paint off and shoot it in satin.
Same problem on my 2000 3500. I think it would be harder to find people who didn't have their paint flake off of their white Chevy trucks from the 90's thru 2015 and beyond than those who did. This method is a bandaid not a fix.

Why the Paint Fails -Water-Borne Paint Transition: In response to EPA regulations regarding Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), GM shifted from oil-based paints to water-borne paint formulas. The early generations of these water-based topcoats did not bond properly to the factory primer-sealer.
UV Light Vulnerability: White paint must be applied significantly thicker than darker colors to achieve full opacity. The thickness makes it difficult for UV blocking components to work uniformly. Over time, intense sunlight degrades the underlying primer layer, destroying the molecular bond holding the paint to the truck. Rock Chips & Moisture: A single tiny rock chip down to the primer lets moisture slide underneath the top coat. Because the chemical bond is already weak, water acts like a wedge, lifting large flakes of paint away from the surface.
Affected Models and Eras GMT400 & GMT800 Eras (Late 1980s – 2006): This was the peak era for flaking paint on C/K trucks, early Silverados, Tahoes, and Express cargo vans.
Modern Generation (2015 – 2020): This issue resurfaced heavily on modern Chevrolet and GMC trucks, leading to widespread consumer complaints and multiple active paint class action lawsuits alleging delamination without external causes.
Common Fixes Mechanical Stripping: Traditional sanding won't suffice because the failing primer layer must be entirely removed. A body shop must strip the affected body panels down to bare metal. Etch & Epoxy Primers: To ensure the paint never lifts again, shops apply a high-quality aftermarket epoxy primer to seal the metal before spraying a fresh water-borne base and clear coat. Temporary Rattle Can Repairs: On high-mileage work trucks, owners often use a wire brush or high-pressure washer to intentionally blast away the loose paint sheets, hand-sand the hard edges, and spray matching white automotive primer and paint to slow down corrosion.

The fact that GM chose to lawyer up over honoring their product is enough for me to NEVER buy another vehicle from them.
Who wants to buy a "top end" High Country for 90k only to have the company not honor their product?

Man it took me some time about a month to get that flaking paint yep it's because the funky GM sealer and sanding it whines up going to bare metal
My 2005 Yukon XL has started doing the same.

There is always compromise. You get a dark paint and it fades and cracks. You get white and it flakes off
