SUBARU Drain and fill guide! Short and sweet, no BS!
WRX, FORESTER, IMPREZA, LEGACY, CROSSTREK
Watch this guide so you dont mess up your cvt or differential by filling up the wrong places with the wrong juices. I recommend you drain and fill the cvt fluid every 30k miles or more often if you run off-road or drive up and down grades to prolong the life of the transmission. I found that it is wise to have 6 quarts of cvt fluid on hand when you do the job, (4.5-5.5 quarts to fill if you just drained it, takes more if you fill dry after an overhaul) and fill at least 3 qts before running the car in neutral to fill till it starts coming out. The fluid is Orange in color, get the redline cvt non-slip fluid. The diff drain plug is a t70 torx, the other plugs are hex bit (Allen Key) 8mm and 10mm.

I mentioned passenger and driver side incorrectly, i meant to say right hand side, is fill plug or breather.

For those wondering the rear diff drain and fill plug is a 10mm hex bit. The torque specs for both the fill and drain plug is 36 FT-lbs or 49 NM. For the front diff, the fill plug and the check plug is a 8mm hex bit. The drain plug is a T70 torx bit. The torque spec for the fill plug is 51 FT-lbs or 70 NM.

I have a 2018 3.6r. Is the procedure the same? I know it has the beefier TR690.

@kevinAdobo says:

question, for the "check plug" front driff, how can you check it. since fluid goes out when you remove that.

I think my Subaru mechanic sabotaged my ascent and that’s why I had to buy a new transmission for C $11,000.

Great help if you have a hoist meantime at the mercy of the subaru mechanic

so i screwed up and drained the front axel fluid and like an idiot filled the trans with gear oil from the drivers side upper fill plug that you said don't use so i double messed up i didn't start the engine then figured out my mistake i drained and pulled the pan off and cleaned everything with brake cleaner and changed the filter then i made the mistake of filling the transmission through the drivers side upper fill plug you said not to use so now i figure i put 6 quarts in and i did start it to see if it would go into gear and it did so i turned it off and it is now late so tomorrow i'm going back out to work on it. what can happen if i fill the transmission using that fill plug? can i just open the one i should have used and the excess fluid will come out? that top fill only goes to the filter as far as i could see. any help would be great and thanks for this video hopefully you saved my but

So confused, gear oil, CVT oil, transmission fluid? Front and rear differential??? 2004 Forester

@larkinstentz6735 says:

I’m still confused- there is a small yellow dipstick coming out of what I think is the transmission. It’s a 2004 Forrester.

@RKmndo says:

Put neodymium magnets on all your drainplugs. Capture ferrous-metal debris.

@assilarefee1413 says:

I’m watching because I accidentally drained the cvt pan instead of my oil pan
