I wanted to buy a used Subaru but my mechanic told me that Subaru are mechanics' cars. They are great and reliable but cost a bloody fortune to fix. So I bought a used Lexus and a used Toyota Venza.
If Subaru would just ditch the CVT for a classic automatic it would be hands down the best vehicle on planet earth. I love my Subaru and I passionately hate the CVT. CVT's drive like shit. maybe they should go to an EV with a range extender engine. The marginal fuel economy of a CVT is more theoretical the actual and any minor gains in efficiency is not worth it.
Certain generation of Volvos have the same issue. A part in the valve body goes bad, wont shift right in "D" but will shift fine in manual mode, you cant buy just the part you have to buy the whole valve body.
Our 2104 Forrester has been headaches since we bought it. $30,000 out the door. Adult female driven from new, 75k now and problems from the start. All wheel bearings, AC compressor, burning oil, ww washer lines rotted, door controls…. Never ever again
Absolute bollshot that the car can flash all those useless idiot lights but cannot TELL you what the problem is on the big azz infotainment screen or cluster screen.
In manufacturing, the car company sources the most economical parts. If a subsidiary can manufacture it at say 22.00, but they can only do it if 50,000 are purchased. Well it Subaru is only projecting to make 35 000 units with that part then they need to recover the sales for the cost for the remaining parts at a good margin. So , to do that, they build into the program softwares of the unit to "ghost fail". The reason for the light but no real drivable or systems issues. This has been going on for a long time. Car manufacturers are in the parts and service business, they just sell you the platform to use them on.

As always, he solution should be simple. Drive a manual.

The most durable cvt is like the prettiest one in the burn ward.

Dude, your hand is as big as the cvt transmission.
