Awesome video, Justin, you seem to know your stuff! The flexplate on my 95 Impreza ripped apart at the bolt pattern area so I am replacing it now, I just saw my seperator plate is melted right through from the heat of the rubbing flexplate. the back of my engine is completely caked in oil now. I forgot what I was going to ask….crap. I was looking for some advice but my mind is blank now – typical. anyways, thanks again for the video, it helps!

Great information here. Thanks for this from a Subie enthusiast!

Good video, only just got a Suby with an oil leak. This helps me understand this engine and likely, I have a oil leak similar to shown here. – thanks for sharing.

Hey, is there a subaru part # for that o-ring for the piston wrist pin access cover? Or an aftermarket part # if you have it. Thanks.

i have a 1994 subaru impreza l. i cant find the separator plate for my year do you kno where i can find it?

Alex P says:

Thanks! I found out that my main oil leak came from a loose sensor! It was a sensor near the passenger side valve cover, between the firewall and the engine. It was dripping like mad and the air was pushing it all over the bottom and made it look like something else. I will check that left rear wrist pin access o-ring as well! Thank you!

Justin Stobb says:

2006 should NOT have a plastic Seperator plate, most common leak at the rear would be the left rear wrist pin access o-ring. Also the sealer can fail on the sep plate over time which would just require resealing the sep plate you already have.

Alex P says:

I tried looking everywhere…. do 2006 impreza’s still use plastic seperator plates? I have a moderate oil leak, and a shop diagnosed it to be the RMS. After extensive searching, it looks like the RMS doesn’t fail on these vehicles, and it should be the oil separator plate that’s causing this issue. I would like to be confident before pulling out my transmission and clutch and flywheel.

If i pull all those components out, what other seals or maintenance should I do, now that it’s already out?

Great upload, this happened to me when I fitted my first ej20, 1 week later it started to pump out oil, so I had to take the engine out again ;-/

Great info, thanks!

SubaruXT6 says:

this has to be whats leaking in my outback.
hard to see numbers.

i bet 10/1 that’s my problem.

Justin Stobb says:

Most likely its just condensation but I would keep an eye on it, if thats the only pace you see it, you are most likely ok, its also possible the crankcase isn’t sealed anymore.

baggyaxewound says:

hey, on my motor (ej20h) the pipe ontop of the case above the seperator plate and the tube to the intake, has got some creamie oil in it is this just from condensation or should i be worried.. thanks
