Very informative video! My 2000 Subaru Outback is having this issue,
hopefully this is the same solution!

Adam Campbell says:

Thank you Drew!

I have a 1998 Subaru Impreza Brighton and my wipers were having the same
problem. I’ll admit, I had a hell of a time getting the new bushing to go
on the ball that connects it to the motor. This was because there was no
access panel directly above the problem area. I just had to manipulate the
arm (connected to the motor) to make more accessible as the closest service
hole was 12inches away. It was a small space to work for sure, but got’er
done! Thanks to you.
I feel pretty good too because I could tell a mechanic tried to fix it at
some point before me and obviously failed to do so. (Patting myself on the
back.)

Cheers,
Adam

i have to say, your video is fantastic. my windshield wipers were smacking
both up and down. I bought the “help” kit and with your play by play video,
my wipers are perfect. Thank you for your help. Amazing video.

Fixed my 2009 Subaru Legacy sedan when the wipers stopped working
completely–could definitely hear the motor spinning though. Tried to take
everything apart myself. While I was on the right track, seeing the vid
helped me to not give up and go to repair shop. Couldn’t figure out how to
get the last bit of plastic off without breaking things–and I never woulda
trimmed down the bushing piece either. I even found the old bushing piece
and it wouldn’t stay in so this vid totaly saved me. Thx Drew!

Doug Spilman says:

note to comments below – video is complete in every way – just go slow and
methodical. My 2001 Forester looked exactly the same parts wise. Also
remember to lubricate with white (non-petroleum) grease any new grommet and
ball joint at motor connection. I only had to replace grommet joining the
two lever arms, kit has three of the needed variety. I trimmed the first
per video but it didn’t stay. Used the second one as is and whala – result
is bomber secure connection.

Ted Waldon says:

Thanks for putting this on line. With the video it was pretty simple and
fixed my problem. I fixed my 2002 Outback Impreza, no problem!

Zellabooks says:

Thanks for saving me money Scooby Drew!

Ubon94 says:

Hi, I have an 02 WRX and my driver side wiper is over shooting of the
windshield when wiping. I was wonder if this is what I need to do to fix
it? Thanks

Bill Bruderman says:

Wow! Thanks for all the details. My 2003 Forester has a different assembly
that just lifted off after I removed the cowl and 3 retaining bolts. I used
the same bushing set you suggested. It works great. Took all of an hour or
so.

timexchen says:

I just bought 49447 bushing and trimmed it a little bit to fit on my 02
forester wiper linkage. There are 4 clips on the 49447 and I cut 3 off and
left only 1 on it. Then put some Gorilla glue on the bushing and inserted
it through the linkage hole. Pop the ball joint into the bushing with some
tricky effort and some grease. Done.

AncientLegacy says:

thanks for posting this up here. helped a lot.

SXshooter1 says:

Thanks so much for the great vid. Got the same problem with my 99 forester,
now that I know whats probably causing the issue I can go grab the parts
and stop those wipers from slamming down.

Tony S. says:

Thanks, man. will be doing this come spring. Shakeman.

xiaotheman says:

thanks heaps for your post, just fixed my wiper on my outback using ur
method. its a different assembly but the bushings are the same size. I
bought this car a month ago and it was previously used on a farm, a lot of
dust and derbies got inside and accelerated the wearing of the bushing.

Ted Knaul says:

Great video, I fixed my 2001 Forester in about 30 minutes. I didn’t take
everything out just replaced the nylon nut. The point he made about adding
metal or large thin washer behind was very important. Thanks Drew.

Blacksheep48 says:

Good Vid Got a similar problem on a 2001 Forester. I went to the local
u-pull it yard and practiced on a 2002. Got the motor and linkage all in
one shot. The new linkage is in great shape so I plan to replace the old
one.

73scamp says:

Great video……just what i needed to start

Adam K says:

Dude, many thanks for your video. Just completed fixing mine, in the
freezing cold when they snapped off. Perfect video to explain it all.
Thanks!

gtfiveliter says:

I tried cutting off the tabs that run from top to bottom, and still no
luck. Now my wipers don’t work at all!!!! I’m screwed. Even with the switch
off, the wipers try to move every 10 seconds or so. Weird. If you can help,
please do! I spent over 2 hours, and it was a hell of a job trying to get
that linkage back in and bolted in. I really appreciate your video, I just
have horrible luck sometimes when trying to fix things.

Jim Mertz says:

Thanks for taking the time to post this, I had the same issue with my 01
outback sedan and the part kit saved the day!

Jacob Henke says:

I am about to dive into the linkages on my 98 Impreza L. Thanks for the
info everyone. I talked to the dealer and they want about 150 for parts and
about that much again for labor… hahaha nope.

gtfiveliter says:

Great video. Thank you. I attempted this today, BUT, I could not get those
new bushing to fit! I bought the exact same ones you did. I’m not sure what
part of the bushings you cut off to make it fit, you didn’t happen to show
it in the video. There are those tab things on the sides of the bushing
that run from top to bottom – did you cut all those? or the tabs on the
bottom of the bushing? Please help. Again I couldn’t get them to fit, and
had to put it all back together with my old parts.

Doug Spilman says:

thanks – very good step by step. I did this exactly except for trimming
grommet. I saw on Subaru forum (and below) where grommet sometimes “comes
out” of wiper lever arm hole due to not being held in – solution from forum
was to heat slightly the grommet with hot air tool then one-by-one force
backing tabs (the ones you trimmed) thru the hole until grommet is seated
AND held in place by back tabs. Small thing really, but it could prevent
grommet from unseating later. Thanks again.

My Forester 2011 is still shinning brightly… no rust, no corrosion. I
must say that your skills are great man. You simply rule!

Charles Paul says:

Thank you for this video… I had a problem with replacing the motor and
couldnt get it back together. Your video shows the disassembly (and
frustration of breaking the cover).

Mike Altona says:

VERY HELPFULL, THANKS

Zellabooks says:

The 49447 works with the 02 WRX. You use the big one with the plastic X
looking holding pieces. It took a little bit to get the piece into the arm
but it was not hard. I then just tapped it with a rubber mallet on the ball
joint & done. I recommend on the WRX take the whole wiper unit out. The WRX
is much easier to get out then the forester shown above. You take off the
wiper arms, the rubber piece under the hood and softly pull of the plastic
cover. Then it is three bolts for the whole unit.

2010Reilly says:

thanks man I’m having that trouble right now went around to all the local
auto parts and all they had was that assortment then went to subaru and
they don’t sell those you have to buy the whole assembly for $116 and my
local junk yard doesn’t have any subies to steal some parts from so now I’m
off to get those now that i know they will work

mozbycat says:

Great video….we used it for my 1999 legacy…slightly different but the
key was the way you fitted the new bushing and getting the linkage
out…job was easier with 80 degrees and sunny!

MegaOligofren says:

Thank you sir

TheBigwater says:

Just wanted to thank you so much for taking the time to show us this. Very
considerate of you. My dealer wants CAN $160 for the entire assembly while
the Dorman 49447 parts are easily available at local car places and even
Canadian Tire. Thanks so much.
