Scooby’s have a Looonng Timing Belt!

SubaruXT6 says:

I’ll try your method, my EJ22 phase 2 doesn’t idle correctly, worse case is
that i have a bent valve. looses power once in awhile.

Spike Spiegel says:

Thanks Brian!

spike666spike666 says:

I meant lines on the belt itself like some belts come when you buy them.
I’m thinking I just count the teeth like it says in the book. If I do that
does it make a difference in which way I put it on? Like so you can read
the part number? Oh and there’s no arrow on the belt either. It’s brand
new. I can see the timing marks on the crank , cam pulleys and cover.Thanks.

briansmobile1 says:

You don’t need lines on the belt. Just make sure the belt is tight all the
way around before you decide you’re done and turn the key.

briansmobile1 says:

Clean the gears with cleaner and a rag till they appear. There will be
indents.

spike666spike666 says:

I bought a ITM timing belt for my 1997 legacy outback 2.5l DOHC. There’s no
line to line up with the crank nor cams. What should I do???

STRIKER520 says:

Not a Fram filter if people stop using them they will go away or start
making a quality filter.

Nomad9986 says:

thanks man, help me a lot

fraghunter says:

is it true that u have to open the entire engine to replace the timing belt
for the SUBARU sti?

briansmobile1 says:

Correct. There’s pins on the cams so they only go on one way. 4′ pipe
wrench on the outside of the pulley and a 22mm socket and breaker bar on
the bolt.

MeyerG4Indiana says:

Perhaps the best tutorial video on Youtube. You are smarter than a
squirrel. Love how you low tech’d the grenade- sweet!

briansmobile1 says:

When the marks are lined up the pistons are centered in their stroke. This
means they can’t hit the valves while the crankshaft is on its alignment
mark.

Liamautomechanic says:

good vid, easier when ye have the motor out,

briansmobile1 says:

I don’t know. Pull them off and look at the back sides of them. I think
they’re the same- not sure.

Mike Delegan says:

Brian- I just have to throw this one out there…My wife’s forester (98)
had a rebuild (overheating) due to bad head gaskets. The mech. pulled the
motor, took his time, replaced all gaskets & seals, & got the head
machined. However, he did NOT replace any of the tensioners or pulleys for
the timing belt. 3k miles later a flashing check engine & rough idle-the
tensioner that was in your vice failed, & took half of the motor with it
(bent valves) requiring a partial rebuild ;(

homer2167 says:

Hey Brian, your posts are great!! can u review timing and valve adjustments
on 98′ Subaru 2.5L DOHC? Im just starting a rebuild….thx. Troy

briansmobile1 says:

@mdelegan THAT SUCKS! If you squish it in the vice fast that happens. Also
if you don’t tighten the bolt all the way it happens too. Sorry dude.
BUMMER!

KER0423 says:

Brian, i took my timing belt off for some head work & now I’m ready to
re-install belt & my three marks have faded away so much I can’t see where
to line up on cam pulleys & crank. If I can’t find the belt marks can I
just put the belt on & set all the pullys with the tick marks strait up &
let it ride?

CPLBSS88 says:

How are the new foresters? i’m looking at getting an 08 or newer one…I’m
looking for reliability and serviceability and generally I have found the
older the better but I cannot find any that are not very high miles…and I
like the new body style more since I’m tall and it will be a family
vehicle. Thanks for another great vid!

PaintballSpecialOps says:

THANK YOU!!!!

briansmobile1 says:

Way to go Joey! Next one will be a breeze.

Simon Wex says:

The service manual says to only compress the tensioner while it is
vertically-oriented. I’m not sure why, but because of this I just use a big
c-clamp.

SoulAmazing92 says:

Thanks for the post!!

Gary Blount says:

Thanks for all the great videos Brian. Invaluable information and help.

jamesnm21 says:

The acceleration test was inconclusive. The smoke coming from the tailpipe
might have been a little blue but hard to tell. It’s a manual so stomping
the gas in first gear doesn’t really torque it out that much and I’m
hesitant to try winding it out to super high rpm with that knocking sound.
The sound subsided again after the engine warmed (3-4 min) but is still
intermittently audible, but to a much lesser degree. Anything else I should
check?

suba9785 says:

The ej251 is an excellent engine, however the head gaskets do weep. But
once they are done your golden.

peru0088 says:

gracias por el video me sirvio de mucho

hernandadmx says:

@briansmobile1 thanks

Brett Heath says:

I used a allen key but great vid buddy

briansmobile1 says:

@mpayne171 You bet. I filmed that today ; )

briansmobile1 says:

@33commando33 Thanks. Glad to help.

clint chamberlain says:

Subaru timing belt

spike666spike666 says:

So when I put the cam shaft pulleys back on it won’t matter how I place
them as long as the lines mark up? Oh one more ? what’s the best redneck
method to pull the harmonic balancer off and loosen the bolt up?

briansmobile1 says:

@hernandadmx Hydraulic press.

25rsboy says:

@briansmobile1 not on mine ; )

patricky0 says:

hey commented on you video on blown head gaskets on these engines. would
timing belt being loose throw a code for misfires (specifically 3rd and
4th) and cause general noisiness of engine operation? i have replaced
everything dealing with electrical and fuel components to fix this problem
