I dont think this is something i can do in a weekend if I have a full time 9-5 and i need the car.. Any one has any suggestions? Usually I do everything myself.

Savli Bicho says:

Firstly, I'd like to thank you this video as it's going to help me with my process. I'm currently thinking of replacing a ej253 knocking rod – caused by low oil. I have the tools to do this at home and was thinking of pulling the engine out and just replace other parts at the same time. Would you recommend that I pull the engine or leave it in the bay?

Theodore Rinehart says:

Congrats 80K viewers, Eric is that worthy of a shot lol? rarely see Fords, or Chevy's with head gasket trouble, like my 3.5 in my 2013 Taurus

Adam R says:

Awesome video! I am doing this to my 2005 2.5 Impreza Outback right now. I am having a hell of a time getting the cam sprocket bolts out…any tips for when these are stuck?

D10078 says:

I ended getting a 2017 Chevy Cruze and releasing my 2007 Subaru Forester 2.5. AWD. The Forester only had 81,064 miles but after finding the costs and procedures required to replace head gaskets at this timeframe. It was better to let the dealership deal with it than me. Cause it was my only transportation At least the Forester debt was wiped clean with the transaction.

Bob Loblah says:

Ugh!!! My video would have gone something like this… "Sorry sir/ma'am, your POS subaru needs head gaskets. Take it to Subaru to fix it. I'll take my diagnosis fee and go work on gravy jobs instead!!!

Maxime Clermont says:

That is an EJ251 not a EJ253.

Wyr Twister says:

Would you say most of the head gasket problems are caused by overheat ?

Are most of the overheat problems caused by neglect ?

Thanks , 🙂

God bless
Wyr

viperz888 says:

Hey Eric, how do you keep track of what nuts and bolts go where? Do you store them in a particular order or have you just done so many jobs you kinda know what goes where?

rdhphoto1 says:

Ooops! "Eric O's Tip's Garage". I said Steve in my last comment's cause I was reading another comment written by a Steve.

h martinez says:

Thanks for reply which I understand but I have 07 Impreza with 82000 with head gasket leaking called Subaru of America they said they wouldn't do anything for me I think if Subaru owners have same issues need to call Subaru of America make a case number so then maybe they will see the issue

MissouriOldTimer says:

what are those plires called that you are using to unhook the electrical connectors?

h martinez says:

Subaru need to fix what wrong I will never buy another Subaru

Art Vandalay says:

Awesome vid man! Im about to start on mine this weekend.

neko chibi says:

Hello would this repair work the same for a 1999 model?
Thank you!

Bryan Rice says:

Quick question: Is it okay to remove the crank pulley like that? I have a manual transmission 2004 Subaru Legacy and I'm having trouble taking the crank pulley off. The intake manifold is already off and I need to take the crank pulley off to continue.

Kelly 123 says:

That hood light is nice where did you buy that

motorhead says:

So much for Subaru's being so good…All my Chevy's have over 250k just wheel bearings and fuel pumps. Weird suby motors sound like a plug wire is off anyhow..junk.

LanguageBoneHead says:

I successfuly replaced both head gaskets using this procedure but didn't
realize going in that I had a serious tranny problem. The 'delayed
engagment' where you put it in drive and nothing happens for 5 to 300
seconds. At the time it was just a 5 second delay which didn't cause
me concern. Seems to have been solved by Sub by MY 2002 says the
internet. So might be getting a new car. I will try TRAN-X
additive but wife is gunna want new wheels regardless.

Michael Dekowski says:

Eric, where did you get the tool you used on the crank pulley bolt? (the hammer tool)

James Chavez says:

Mr. O if you do alot of work on Subaru's you should check out Company23. They make specialty tools for holding the cam sprockets, crank pulleys, and various other Subaru oddities.

Dan D says:

Excellent videos, descriptions and camera views. Just bought a 2001 outback and will be relying a lot on this head gasket video. Hopefully the layout is similar. Thanks for all the hard work!!!

Daniel Lee says:

Excellent vid, really!!!! TY soooo much! I know enough to know you know what your doing and love your personality and sense of humor! I also know I don't want to do this myself….LOL. I have worked on everything from weed eaters, Chain saws, cycles, cars, farm tractors….on and on and im sick of it…. now….. I have taken over my wife's business and now sell avon…LOL, Life is a trip! I have a good friend who is a professional mechanic and I will pay him to do it. You remind me so much of him. TY for the vid!

I just sold my last Subaru. I have been building them and drag racing them for the last ten years. You can make some good Hp out of the Subaru sti ej25. But I got tired of head gaskets and ringland failures. There is something about 600hp and AWD.

MAP74 says:

I need to remove the drivers side head on an EJ255 due to loss of compression via exhaust from cylinder 2. I confirmed with leak down test. The EJ255 has solid lifters/tappets. I will probably have to replace tappets to adjust valve clearance while I'm at it. Would you remove the head with the engine in the vehicle or remove the engine? This is on an 05 Legacy. Very good job on the videos, the work you do is time consuming and I'm sure frustrating at times. Don't know how you have the patience to set up a camera and document what you do but I'm sure many including myself appreciate it.

Desmond Blyan says:

u shud get hanna to be camera girl

MissouriOldTimer says:

I have an 03 Baja with right at 250,000 miles on it and I notice I am getting some oil in the water so I suppose that head gasket is leaking, I am considering getting one of those Japanese engines that are supposed to have only around 50,000 miles on them and just change the engine out, they say the cam, crank gears and the intake needs to be changed , I guess for the emissions thing, I bought on of these for the 86 subaru and it was real good, I was thinking about fixing the gaskets on this old engine , are the replacement gaskets any better than the ones that came on the car new??
