THIS HELPED THANKS

Jared Bawden says:

This is a great alternative to using the ridiculous tools that you supposedly need to work on these. I'm actually going to try loosening the bolts with the car in gear first, but if that doesn't work, this will be my next step. Thanks for sharing.

Radley Bradford says:

You saved my night Bro! I'm not working on a Scoob tho, it's a Lexus. This would work on all makes, no? Revise the title and get more views? Just trying to help, THANK YOU for posting this!!!

Young Wychea says:

I used a pipe wrench, Allen key and pipe from my big jack

Mike says:

That’s why FlatIronsTuning created the FU bolts. I hate these bolts. Great video!

Okayman says:

dang I threw away my old belt. where can I find another old belt?

Billy chi says:

buy the cam holder wrench for 30 bucks, tap the bolt with a mallet, easier when engine out of car. My 02 wrx just broke the bolts with ease no impact. Also if you have the dots lined up the valves will not hit the piston

Pavel Osovets says:

This is one way to do the job if you do it only once or it s a field-repair. For someone who will do this more than once, buying a sprocket holding tool from Company 23, or any of the Amazon/eBay versions, is a worthwhile investment.

Install the crankshaft bolt, but not all the way bottomed on the snout, lay the sprocket holding tool on the crank bolt, and use a breaker bar to loosen the bolt. Makes it a one-man job and very easy to do.

Pro tip: get yourself a FA20/FB25 crankshaft bolt to have in your tool set. It is the same size and thread pit as the EJ crank bolt, but it has a longer shank which makes it easier to use the bolt as a stopped for the cam sprocket holding tool on both banks of the EJ-series engines.

corthirteenth94 says:

Does not work even with breaker bar or impact. Belt stretches. Suggest just ordering the holding tools to save the headache.

Manuel Bravo says:

What would happen if I took the pressure off the driver cam before lining the ticks up?

Isaac B. says:

Is it necessary to lock the cams in place before you slide the sprocket off?

Skyler Kraykovic says:

When i took off my timing belt my cam spun a bit and made a slight clinking noise. Now my crank is off by 1 tooth and the top right cam is off to the left about 30 degrees. Is it safe to remove and replace the cam?

Garrett says:

I broke a reducing socket and a 10mm hex socket on one of my cam bolts. Got out the angle grinder, ground the outside of the bolt to 16mm hex (used the inner hex as a guide), and finally got it off. It felt like over 150ft-lbs of torque to break it, and I thought for sure the bolt was going to shear, but somehow it came off…Also I used the cam tool and just had it rest on a sturdy surface while a friend held both the socket and the tool firmly against the cam gear.

Stephen Bay says:

I saw your other video on this bolt and asked why you did not use an impact wrench. I heard what you said here, about how some people may strip the bolt. I guess then it's a judgement call for each person, but at least you showed a safe, sure-fire way to do it. Thanks! Great video!

Lifesaver dude

Phillip Do says:

DUDE HOLY FUCK THANK YOU

Paul says:

I know you made this video a while ago, but I just picked up an sti and about to tackle this job. When removing the pulleys from the cam gears, do they only go back on one way? Is there some kind keyway that lines up when you put the pulley back on? Just want to make sure everything lines back up when it's time to time the engine and the belt.

Joshua Crosby says:

Mine spin when I have 3 vice grips and when I try to wrap under same and over crank then down and standing on belt it slides the belt and spins

Rori Alexander says:

Thank you for the clearly explained video on doing this job. Awesome!

Mike Brewer says:

I know you posted this 2 years ago. But its still helping folks. My daughter's boyfriends forester blew a cam pulley and we would have never got it off without your help! Thank you!

Rad Clifford says:

Did you end up doing a cam seal replacement video mate? Thanks

Husain Basir says:

I have the 23 tool for the EJ257 and the Timing belt holding the cams are way easier to remove and no damaging of the cams nor the bolt. As I have almost stripped 1 of 4. Three came off with relative ease (i say relatively as putting over 100 lbs to break them loose.) also i think it is way easier when the motor is being held by the car not an engine stand.

Rad Clifford says:

Great video! I'm about to do the timing belt for the first time on my 98 WRX and I want to do the camshaft seals while I'm in there. How do I ensure that the camshafts will stay at the timing marks when I remove the sprockets? I'm worried that the cams will spin when I release the sprocket after removing it

Joe Romans says:

What breaks the camshaft bolt on the timing gear

leeswrxsti says:

Just a bit of info, as long as your timing marks line up, All of the pistons are recessed enough not to make contact with the valves. Also, the intake cam on the on the driver side must be rotated clockwise then realigning and the exhaust counter clockwise, or they can make contact. Hope this helps.
