Junkyard Subaru WRX Engine Restoration | Redline Rebuild Time-Lapse

We took a clapped-out Subaru WRX EJ205 turbo-charged engine with almost 300,000 miles on it and COMPLETELY rebuilt it. And as always, we recorded time-lapse video of every single step of the process. The rusty body of our well-loved 2002 Subaru WRX hatchback was beyond saving, but its turbo-charged flat-four 2.0L engine will live on as we meticulously disassemble, clean, machine, and reassemble it to better-than-new condition. Make sure you watch until the end to see if it fires up for the first time on a custom-built (out of 2×4’s, plywood and a pallet rack) engine stand. If it starts, the only question left is: What should we put this in?

Thanks to our sponsor RockAuto.com. RockAuto.com is an auto parts retailer founded in 1999 by automotive engineers with two goals: Liberate information hidden behind the auto parts store counter (by listing all available parts, not just what one store stocks or one counter-person knows), and make auto parts affordable so vehicles of all ages can be kept reliable and fun to drive. Wow, I hope Fram paid a lot for that product placement. Tip for Subaru owners: Don't buy orange Fram filters. Just don't.

Put it in a brat, keep the purity

Efrain Uribe says:

well im 11 months late to this but the engine already needs a rebuild

Collieman says:

Why are these engines being rebuilt? Maybe they have problems or are just worn out?

poncoolride says:

Just install it back into the bug eye hatchback you removed it from. Basically, just kinda resto-mod it. Then enjoy driving the hell out of it.

Dustin Stackhouse says:

That was really neat! I'm confused about one bit though. How are the pistons bolted up? You slid them in through the top after the halves of the case were together. Was the rod already fastened to the crankshaft and you somehow fit the wrist pins through the sides somewhere?

Brian Valley says:

That's one goofy design for an engine.

Billy Rowe says:

Please do mine next. Mine went from 49k to 215k without a single issue, still original battery and starter, etc. The only thing replaced was clutch and headlamp. Now I have a check engine light and loss of compression in a cylinder. It is no longer my daily car but it has been the most reliable thing to me and I really want to fix it up! I love doing everything myself, never had anything fail on me but I don't trust myself with this work lol.

Alfred Coates says:

Put it in a Karman Ghia

Krush says:

freaking sick

mahbod sadrosadat says:

Dennis Bisconti says:

Put it in a Volkswagen beetle it should work ?

sam TourerV says:

Lucas Roach says:

what did you do to the outside of the engine block to make it look so good?

Patrick Taylor says:

❤ my advice put the motor in a sand rail dune buggy with a turbo

Тима Мухан says:

Ghøst says:

The aperture on the thumbnail makes the engines look tiny lol
