How To Subaru Parking Brake Shoe Replacement

How To Subaru Parking Brake Shoe Replacement

I’ve done a lot of work to this Outback over the past few years. My friend suspected a brake caliper sticking on. As it turned out, the car was due for a complete set of brakes and front caliper replacement. Within the pile of parts was some parking brake shoes which I figured would be a good thing to show.

The parking brake shoes on most vehicles are relatively the same. Using the inside of the brake rotor as a drum, the shoes are replaced as if they were a set of rear drum brakes. At first glance drum brakes may seem difficult to do, but as you can see they are easily replaced. Park brake adjustment is important to make them work properly when the handle is pulled.

Thanks for watching! Lots of new subscribers finding the channel, I love it! I’ve got a large job pulled into my garage that requires diagnosis before disassembly. It’s not a Subie, but should make for a series of videos! STAY TUNED!

Great video…. How many miles was this car at? And why do they ever wear if they just hold the car when parked?

Why in heck don't they use rotors with that little circular port so you can access the parking brake adjuster directly?

@ 14:55 you said “I do have brake tools…” while putting on the upper springs,
Was wondering if there’s any tools specifically to hold the bloody spring stretched or back specially for when connecting the hand brake cable to a new shoe!?
If yes, what it called plz
Thanks

I have watched a lot of folks showing how to do e breaks and I just happened to see your demonstration and in fact you were very thorough and helped me as am about to take off the whole spindle. the entire back hub for a machine shop to pressing the hub and bearing in my old one.
With your help I trust the Lord to help me replace the break system without consulting any one.
Keep the good work up and will be checking on you for more infos. on subarus.

Thanks and God bless you.

Hey, do you know if the rear brake drum assembly on the second gen Foresters comes apart the same way as the "drum in hub" parking brake on this Outback? Trying to deal with a 2003 Forester X (rear drums) with a seized parking brake/rear brakes. Thanks!

Thanks for the video. Steps were very easy to follow and made my parking brake job go very smoothly. I was stuck on getting the stupid springs back on but your little screwdriver trick worked perfectly. Thanks for showing how to do the job with common tools!
