How to replace the CV axle in your Subaru

How to replace the CV axle in your Subaru

This is the CV axle brand I’ve had the best luck with. They are new. The reman one’s are often hollowed out. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000CFHCTA/ref=…

Brian:
Just wanted to give you a big THANKS on Thanksgiving day. This is the
second video of yours that has really helped me (other was head gaskets)
with my 2001 Subaru Forester.
To folks considering a passenger side CV axle replacement, pay attention to
Brian’s roll pin punch advice. I tried to improvise with a long nail,
sawed off square. Get a punch before tackling this job.
Brian, you rock. Happy turkey day.

Ignacio Barcia says:

Hi your videos are awesome. Thank you for that. I wanted to ask you if this
instructions would differ too much from a 2000 Legacy GT. I need to do
mine. Also you are not taking apart the lower control arm or the disk and
brakes right? That would make it so much simpler!

ThatDubstepGuy1996 says:

Can I do this with the car on ramps? Or do I need the wheels suspended?

Chris Hall says:

You are a gentleman and a scholar! Thanks for the video upload.

Gary Dunning says:

Just replaced my CV’s, thanks for the video. One thing that happened was
those roll pins holding the cv to the transmission shaft. I drove the first
pin out then pulled the cv out but the trans shaft came out with the cv. I
guess the shaft had some rust and stuck fast. I had no choice but pull off
the trans shaft from the old cv, put the shaft on the new CV and then
install the new CV. The other side CV I did not bother removing the pin,
just pulled and out it came. Replaced and all is fine.

va3ied says:

Brian Another great vid…When you replace your cv’s do you notice the
jobber parts wear out faster? I remember having a 2 wheel drive legacy and
found the OEM lasted way longer…wondering if the 4 wheel drives
distribute the wear and tear better with fewer issues than the 2 wheel
drive..plan to remove the engine in the 01 legacy this spring for a
HG…your videos-and unassuming approach–builds confidence for us semi
mechanical types.I actually like working on the subie more than my TR6 scott

Shaun Kijak says:

thanks very much i figure for 4.00 each just get new ones. and what are
your feelings about autozone remans and oreilleys remans so many mixed
views and beliefs. thansk for a rapid reply too. long time viewer finally a
first time subscriber! your the snap dizzle mr brian

briansmobile1 says:

Thanks! When people express appreciation like that I know it was worth
doing.

Regan Gibson says:

Didn’t tighten my lug nuts down enough! 🙁 Rumbling is gone.

Adrian Skywalker says:

What thickness should the driver tool have? I’m about to remove the drive
shaft on my 1992 Libero microvan. I kinda’ eyeball measured 4mm, but I’m
not sure. One hell of a messy job with the CV boots. Don’t get me wrong, I
love working on cars and everything, but this is one of those things that I
wouldn’t want to do ever again in my life. I tried to only go with removing
the outboard joint, but I can’t put it back in place, I must take the shaft
out of the gearbox. Great video. Helped a lot.

klosnoski says:

Kudos. fought this in my early years as a tech. Need a vid of the bleed
screw on the rad on the outbacks for a WP replacement. have had a grillion
calls on overheat issues on outbacks and others after diy pump jobs . i
have even missed it twice . doom on me

briansmobile1 says:

You’re welcome!

briansmobile1 says:

You’re welcome Crack my friend!

assaltshaker says:

Thanks Brian, How do you remove a tri-pot type axle that does NOT have pin
to punch out?

briansmobile1 says:

Sometimes I do it on the bench. It’s easy to go too far on the bench and
block the opening- also if you do it under the car you can look through the
hole to see if it’s alined. With a pin in it you’re blocked and could
easily be off 180.

1audionote says:

I own a 2008 Subaru Sti and I bought the factory service manual. I just
replaced the front wheel bearings on my car and the manual says the axel
nuts needed to be torqued to 162ft.lbs failure to torque the wheel nuts to
spec will result in bearing failure. I find it hard to believe that you
would omit such an important detail. The subaru you were working on has a
correct torque spec for the axel nuts and you should never just impact
wrench them on….”knowledge is king”

briansmobile1 says:

Pry between the housing it sticks in and the tri-pot.

briansmobile1 says:

Welcome!

briansmobile1 says:

I don’t know man.

Wagonman5900 says:

WOW! I didn’t expect an answer that certain. So your saying I bought an
axle that was already worn? Phooey.

Hystile1 says:

Thanks this was very helpful.

fuq yeuh says:

had a problem, swapped the front axles, and there is noise coming from the
front end, going to get it checked out, sounds annoying its a constant
clicking sound coming from below the shifter

7Westwood says:

Thanks for another GREAT video… You will save me a ton of money !!!!

Ted Christman says:

Brian, good job, very straight forward.

briansmobile1 says:

I don’t know- possibly it would send all power to front stubs and you
wouldn’t move?

patches301 says:

How do you get the axle nut off? mine will not budge!

Michael Lewis says:

question for you will the rear axles of a 97 outback fit a 2002 rear diff?
I can’t figure out if they both use the same axles or one is male/female.

briansmobile1 says:

You’re welcome!

briansmobile1 says:

Forester didn’t come out till 1998. Cardone Select 66-7055 New CV Axle Link
in the description.

briansmobile1 says:

@MrAbrink On that I’d clean the battery cables and then see what’s up from
there.

briansmobile1 says:

@Epill11 Yes

briansmobile1 says:

You’re most welcome!

georgemiamitaz says:

i wish he would replace my cv axle…………. in my pants

Regan Gibson says:

After rebooting the axle and putting it back in I notice a bad rumble
coming from the wheel at high speeds. Could I have damaged the bearing by
hammering on the axle to get it out, or over-torquing it? Also I noticed
very slight play in the inner axle joint after I rebooted it. Any thoughts?

chris michail says:

Hey Brian! Do you know, the correct cv joints i need for my car? There
still on the car because i dont want to take them off and then take to long
to find them. So there not broken yet but are ticking alot. I’ve been told
that the outer teeth mesures 27mm,the inner side is 22mm, and the middle
seal is 56mm. I thought someone like you who has worked on a few Subaru car
will know. Thanks Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. Subaru Forester Turbo 1997
Chassis Number SF5 Engine model EJ20G

briansmobile1 says:

If the cross bolt comes out and it’s not rusted together you don’t have to.
Ours was Fehrshiznict so we did take it off.

briansmobile1 says:

You’re welcome buddy!

intexxi says:

Awesome quality and very thorough.. Do you know if the axles are similar on
a 11wrx?

rayford52 says:

the mother in law needs alternator work for some reason on subarus 5
warning lights comes on when the alternator messes up, I have had that
happen to me twice and I am on my forth subaru I really like them.

Josh Gillispie says:

What do you mean about the dimple, and how can I be sure that it’s correct?
