this video made it super easy for me today, THANKS. I would add two things: 1) Getting the end of the axle free of the hub/ getting the new one in is a lot easier if you turn the wheel all the way in one direction, away from the side of the car you’re on. and 2) there’s a side of the pin hole on the new axle, and a certain end of the pin, that are both CHAMFERED. the pin goes in considerably easier on that side. also, an old 3/16 drill bit works great for hammering out the pin.
The advice to step on the brake sounds good but usually does not work…it sometimes takes a three foot pipe on the end of a 1″ drive.
What I do: jack the car up to take the weight off and put a wedge under the tire.

do the front and rear axles splines join the to driveshaft/transmission the same way (i.e. are there any seals retaining the differential fluid that might be dislocated during an axle replacement?)

I own a 2008 Subaru Sti and I purchased the factory service manual. It specifically says that unless you are fitting new wheel bearings to the car that you should never break loose the axel nut while the weight of the car is on the wheel and tire. Damage to the wheel bearing is likely. The procedure they recommend is to jack the car up remove the wheel then have someone hold the brake firmly while you break the nut loose from the axel. Just a heads up..”Knowledge is king”

One criticism-you’re allowing the weight of the disc and caliper to be taken up by the flexible brake hose.
