Thanks for the vid man this is by far the best guide on Youtube for the SOHC timing belt. On my legacy the tensioner is different (EJ22E) but its the same thing basically. One thing that i though was funny is that i tried to put the belt with the words on upsidedown and it wouldnt line up the marks but as soon as the words on the belt were in the correct position it was lined up as it should be.

Hi Brian, In the vid you show how to use a hammer on the 22mm crank bolt. I did not catch if the car needs to be in gear (or how to prevent possible counter clockwise rotation of the crank). If there is not a risk of spinning backwards – this is the method I think I’d like to try.. over the starter bump or giant breaker bar methods. Thanks. Great vid.. much appreciated.

Steven Rhodes says:

Do you only have to remove the fan to get to this point that you are at right now? If not, what else do you have to remove in order to get to that point?

Perunavarvas says:

SOHC? Arent boxer engines always “DOHC”?

jimnmira says:

Taught auto tech for 25 years and I couldn’t have done this better. Congratulations, well done. Love you 2.

lol.. that was funny. star wars..

briansmobile1 says:

If it’s scored then yes. Be sure to get it machined first and then you’ll know what oversized rod bearings to buy.

luis ortega says:

Brian when u replace rod bearings do u send crank to macjine shop to resurface

SoundGuyDavo says:

Brian, need to know how to set correct accessory drive belt TENSION if we do not have access to a spring gauge (to apply 22lbs of force) for new drive belts. 2003 Subaru 2.5L engine, thanks! refer a clear video or message me

mackfar27 says:

Is it necessary to replace the Crank Pulley bolt, or no?

nnakraus says:

Star wars sweet haha

Doing a an 03 Outback 2.5L (eng code B) tomorrow. You have really a really good tone, ease and simplicity to your instructions, thanks for posting 🙂

briansmobile1 says:

I hate talking on the phone, but I could answer it here.

Darren George says:

I love watching your videos, very informative, and so down to earth with the repairs. You make repairs look so easy, and with minimal tools. I wish I could talk with you about a 2009 Subaru forest boxer engine I am working on now, it really has me in the dark.

briansmobile1 says:

aint no thang!

kidakrasia says:

I’m really enjoying the videos Brian… thanks for the edjimacation!

briansmobile1 says:

Ah shucks! You’re nice.

Glen Mangan says:

THANK YOU!, this video helped me with a parts issue I was having with a supplier. It’s the most detailed and clearer youtube video I’ve seen of someone changing a timing belt on a 2.5lt Subaru yet 🙂

briansmobile1 says:

Yes. They come with a valve cover gasket set.

energizeryj says:

I need to do the spark plug seal tubes on my 2002 Legacy. Do you just take the valve covers off and pull them out? How do the new ones go in?!?!?! 2.5L…..Thanks for any help.

Darryl Mair says:

If only you lived in Australia, you could help me fix my wrx, it’s not feeling so well :(

Greg Cardoza says:

Hey Brian,

So if are all aligned with the cam shafts on the marks, and you take off the tensioner and the big cam on the right (you are facing the motor) goes out of align a little because the tension was released which way can you turn that cam to align the marks? Is that clockwise? This would be a SOHC Subaru Forester 2.5 engine. Thanks again Brian.

Greg

briansmobile1 says:

It really doesn’t matter. You could have the crank be on and the cams off 180 degrees. If you want to be efficient, take off the short side of the timing cover and line up a cam first.

Greg Cardoza says:

Hey Brian… I’ve noticed from other videos not related to your’s and wanted your opinion… Before you take off the harmonic balancer, do you have to position the small notch in the harmonic balancer with the 0 degree on the indicator. I think I saw one of your videos that just takes it off without doing this procedure. This is for a SOHC subaru forester non turbo. Your thoughts… Thanks.

HowFarToAsgaard says:

I love your videos
do you have the same vid doing a EJ20 turbo?

TheChaztor says:

Wish I could like this twice. Its that good. Thanks for posting this video for the knowledge and the humor.

JacanaProductions says:

How easy of a job is this? Comparing it to my 99 A8 where I need to rent $1500 of special tools to replace the stupid timing belt, this seems like something I could do?

briansmobile1 says:

130 ft. lbs.

mackfar27 says:

This was helpful. I don’t personally like timing belts, I prefer timing chain simply because I’ve never had an issue with them. However, I like challenges and enjoy learning new things. This video makes timing belt replacement look fun and easy. When you use the impact gun or torque wrench for the crankshaft balancer, how much torque should be applied?

briansmobile1 says:

Yes, that’s totally normal.
