How To Add Refrigerant To A Subaru Impreza AC System

Here is how to add refrigerant to a Subaru Impreza car air-conditioning system. If the air conditioner on your Subaru Impreza doesn’t blow cold air anymore, you can recharge it by adding some refrigerant to it, which will make it the air-conditioning system blow cold air again. You can buy a refrigerant kit from any auto parts store, and adding refrigerant to your Subaru Impreza’s air-conditioning system is quite easy.

Here are the instructions.

1. Shake up the refrigerant can.
2. Start the engine on your Subaru Impreza, and turn the air-conditioning on to its highest setting.
3. Plug in the air conditioning refill hose to the low pressure air conditioning port on the Subaru, which is behind the engine.
4. Look at the gauge to see if it shows normal air-conditioning pressure or low pressure.
5. The pressure is low, then pull the trigger on the air conditioner refill bottle to add refrigerant to your Subaru Impreza’s air-conditioning system, only doing it 10 or 15 seconds at a time, and then check the gauge to see if it’s in the green zone.
6. Once you have proper pressure on the gauge, unplug the hose from the air conditioning systems low pressure line, and replace the, and you’re done.

Excellent how-to! I have a 2004 Saab 92x, which is really a 2004 Subaru Impreza… gotta love rebranding… Anyway, it's been a number of years since I've recharged any a/c system and you've taken all the research and or guesswork out of this endeavor! Thanks for your time and efforts.

Marsh Duncanson says:

It would have been good to see how the hose attaches to the fitting. Are you pumping the trigger as you are rocking the can back and forth? The way you're holding the can makes it impossible to see, and you never say if you're squeezing the trigger. Should a person wear any PPE? Gloves? (What if the hose connection lets go? Would this be a freezing hazard?) Is eye protection necessary? You've left a lot out, considering that this is meant to be a DIY vid for people who haven't done it before.
