amazing video and straight forward explanation! the best i’ve seen here! how did you keep transmission from falling out?

Subaru Sti says:

I’m replacing my clutch & flywheel on 2004 STI next week. I have one question to ask. Do you have to remove the Stick Shift also when removing the transmission. “i’m deciding to move the transmission 6″ inch back” Thanks.

Michael Sackstein says:

I’m not surprised. I love Subaru’s, my mom’s been getting them for the past 19 years now. She leases hers, but I am familiar with these sorts of problems as they get older and have high mileage. This is also true with the head gaskets.

Subaru Sti says:

I thank you so much on how much this video helps me!

everthinka says:

You are absolutely right.Mine came apart. All the balls fell out out it.If you hear it making any noise at all it needs to be changed quick.

everthinka says:

My throw out bearing came apart on vacation. Use of your video was helpful, thanks.Did not pull my axles just slid them out of the steering knuckles and pulled the transmission back. Just need to be careful of tearing a CV boot.Lots of room to change out the clutch.

Subaru has a problem with its throw out bearings, they just dont last, I’ve had 3 fail on my legacy in 12 months, not good enough Subaru!

Great DIY I’m in the middle of removing my transmission to replace a broken clutch fork and this video is making it a lot easier. 

how did you pull the axle from the transmission????

7Mulder says:

Very helpful!
I’ll try to change crankshaft gasket. I think it will be same job.

Found out something about the clutch’s and flywheels from my guy at Subaru.

I upgraded my customer to a 2007 clutch. The parts cost is MUCH cheaper then the 2005 setup and eliminates the floating flywheel. Also replaced the Torxs plus bolts with WRX 14mm head bolts.

Scruit says:

I used a pair of SUV jacks and four SUB axle stands. I jacked up the rear of the car first, set it on stands, then jacked up the front. I jacked up both sides at the same time, a couple of pumps at a time to keep it level.

malelee21 says:

Thanks for the video.

How were you able to jack up the car so high?

Scruit says:

Best to drop the trans completely out of the way. However once you have disassembled and disconnected the trans parts as in this video it’s only and extra few minutes of work to lower the trans out of the way. The issue is that you’d need to lift the car even higher to ensure the top of the bellhousing clears the center of the flywheel by enough to get the slide hammer in.

There are smaller tools that might work, but if they don’t then you’ll wind up dropping the trans anyway. Be ready.

mattkshook1 says:

I have an 02 Legacy 5-Speed. I assume the process is nearly identical, other than i dont have a turbo. Is it possible to also replace the pilot bearing with this process? Or will I need to completely remove the transmission.

UNRE4D48LE says:

thanks for this vid
I got forester and probably will be doing this kind of repair too

yelzhan123 says:

man help me with fukn subaru auto tranny really stupid shifting

Scruit says:

Check for TOB noise by starting the car *from overnight cold* and listening to teh trans witht he driver’s door open, fan/radio off. There shoud lbe no sound difference from the trans whether your foot is on the clutch or off it, in gear or in neutral. Any noise that changed based upon clutch perdal position is likely either TOB or input shaft bearings on the trans. The TOB is a common problem.
