1995 Subaru Legacy – one year follow-up on rust hole repair

This is a follow-up to my video “Quick and Dirty Repair of Rust Hole.” One year out, and the patch is still holding on rock solid. Still doesn’t look good, b…

Thanks. I knew the car wasn’t a long term keeper. That, combined with the lack of time for a metal repair led me to do it this way.

As the saying goes, “If it’s stupid and it works it’s not stupid’.

Great option these days when funds may be limited.
Like you said, the repair outlasted the rest of the car.

Great job.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Many thanks. This patch outlived the rest of the car, which I junked when cylinder #2 lost compression. I hope this helps.

Fuck the haters, you’re saving my ass.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

My only advice is to try and get to the backside of the area. If it’s in a similar spot, you can usually pull back trunk liner panels to get to it.

I give ya some credit for something that worked. I’m kind of in the same boat myself right now with my daily driver, a 1996 BMW 3 series coupe. Unfortunately for me, my rust spots are in some very tough spots to get to, and with weddings coming up, graduations, ect. I was hoping for a nice quick fix too. Just to stop the rust. I’m trying out the Rust Converter and not removing all the bad spots, especially since the worst one I can not get to the back side of. I hope it works out well enough.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

They are prone to rust, or at least they used to be. The new ones may be better – I have no experience. Professional body repair is very expensive. I don’t care too much about cosmetics on an older daily driver that’s already lost its value. This didn’t look good, but held solid, didn’t need to be structural, and outlasted the rest of the car. Ugly or not, it was quick, cheap, and did the job.

Shishizurui says:

Mines rusting like a bitch there the past year.
i’m going to try to catch it before it gets that bad.

Subaru’s just inevitably rust there. it sucks.

Pauly McPaulson says:

i know lol i enjoyed your video. and i was impressed with that miracle paint stuff.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

This patch outlasted my ownership of the car and stayed perfectly water-tight. Despite how it looked, that was more or less my goal. I’m satisfied.

Pauly McPaulson says:

LOL

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Best response yet. If I ever have time, I’ll consider it.

CoolasIce2 says:

OK Now for part 3. Sand, apply more filler, sand, prime and paint a closer color. I know YOU don’t want to bother to do a better repair, but the Youtube community demands that you finish it right.

benzlover55 says:

*sigh* some people just can’t be satisfied.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Thanks. I think most people come to Youtube hoping to see someone else’s perfect restoration. Thus was never meant as more than a quick and cheap fix for a daily driver.

TownAndCountry13 says:

My buddy and I just picked up a 95 Subaru outback as a project beater/spare car. 203k, needs some minor work but engine and tranny are great. I actually saw your other video repairing the rust and thought it was a cheap easy fix, so I did it to the Outback! Not pretty, but it works!! Keep up the great videos!

MercedesDieselGuy says:

You’re welcome. It doesn’t seem to be helping with the naysayers, though 🙂

benzlover55 says:

YES, a follow up at last! Thanks man!

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Exactly. This was never for cosmetics. This was to slow the spread of this rust spot and keep the car passing inspection.
