MercedesDieselGuy says:

I believe it’s there on the Impreza, too.

Phillip Jordan says:

Heads up to anyone looking at this with a forester your illumination module is behind the glove box.

Phillip Jordan says:

I tried everything it all stemed from a dumbass mistake of cutting the wires on my stereo while the vehicle was running. I know well enough I shouldnt have done it when I did but I did. I re traced all the wires even replaced the switch itself after the switch I said screw the lights and used a gps. The other day it started to bother me again so I googled after many many google searches I landed on this one.

Phillip Jordan says:

Just wanted to say this video was of huge help. It wasnt exactly what I wanted but was close enough. I have a 98 sub forester same issue no dash lights no dimmer. I drove around now for 6 mnths using my GPS.

Michael Lewis says:

Not just yet kinda haven’t went out and looked for one yet because it’s not that bad, I just can’t adjust the brightness. Maybe in the spring I will get around to it, I’m going to be replacing the whole hatch, it’s cheaper to do that then just replace the glass.. Reason why is someone had a tint on the rear and ripped off all the defrost lines.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Have you tried another unit in place of the old one yet?

Michael Lewis says:

They can

MercedesDieselGuy says:

So, you have LEDs now? I wonder if the factory control unit can even properly dim those…

Michael Lewis says:

I think I blew this control unit in my 97 Outback I was re wiring the gauge for LED’s when I by mistake had a short and I got smoke.. fixed my error and now I can’t dim or make my lights brighter so they are at a fixed setting now.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Hard to say. That’s the next generation car. This car had a lot more in common with its predecessor. You’re best off trying to find a component location listing for 2003. Best of luck.

1luckytexan says:

Do you think this part is in a similar location on our 03 Outback?

Michael Sackstein says:

Haha actually I was kidding about that. but hopefully this did solve your problem b/c if it is in fact the dashboard lights, that’s a lot more complicated to replace

MercedesDieselGuy says:

That would lead to matching hats and t-shirts. I am NOT going to be THAT guy.

Michael Sackstein says:

you should get license plates for the 2 Subarus that say his and hers!

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Believe it or not, that was the first thing I tried 🙂

Michael Sackstein says:

I had that problem with my old ’98 legacy wagon but on that car the dashboard lights would go off whenever I would drive over a bump and the. If u hit the panel they would turn back on

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Yep – his and hers. I only know the yards around Worcester, and even then, I’ve only been to Sam’s and Standard Auto Parts. I think there’s an LKQ yard out in Leominster, but don’t quote me on that. There are places closer to Boston proper, but I don’t know them specifically.

TownAndCountry13 says:

So you have two 95 red legacy wagons? Yours and then this one?

Also, I’m near the Boston area and am wondering if you know of any junk yards that have a good amount of subies to pick through?

Thanks!

MercedesDieselGuy says:

I did. Electronics aren’t my strong point. I believe it’s what one would call a solid state circuit board. But, it’s far too small for me to even try to test, let alone repair. I ended up tossing the old one.

compu85 says:

You should pop the top off that control unit… I bet it contains standard parts inside that can be rebuilt. That’s how the similar control unit in my 91 MB is built.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

As always, the pleasure is all mine.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

It was intermittent at first. The fuse blew every few weeks. Then, the unit died and the fuse kept blowing.

ShoeManShoe68 says:

Great video, great information i am glad to know!
Thank you for sharing sir!

Michael Sackstein says:

was this an intermittent problem or did the dashboard lights just stop working all together?

MercedesDieselGuy says:

All things break, eventually.

playstation2bigs says:

Why the japan made broke ?
