thanks, I won’t worry about it then.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

The ball joints are a bear to replace on these cars. Snapped bolts and they do NOT want to come out of the knuckles.

coonertuner says:

exact same issue as mine, ended up replacing ball joint cuz of it……..and rust was bad…may try the removal of strut way next time……….

MercedesDieselGuy says:

I was worried about it, but nearly two years and over 40,000 miles later, it’s still holding strong as is. Your mileage may vary. In my case, the pin is wedged in there REALLY tight.

davebdave1 says:

Great Video. I bought two different shafts from different manufactures and with one the pin went in easy but the other ended up protruding slightly like yours. Oddly the pin supplied (which I didn’t use) was about 5mm shorter than original so I wonder if it is not designed to be flush on both sides. Have you had any trouble?

MercedesDieselGuy says:

I’ve never had to remove struts to replace an axle on these cars. But, I am replacing ball joints and struts on another Legacy. Everything rusted. Ended up snapping off and then drilling out the ball joint pinch bolt.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Best of luck. Not a very hard job, all things considered, providing that bolts aren’t too rusty.

JC3series says:

nicely done, this will help me with my buddies forester. Good stuff! 🙂

MercedesDieselGuy says:

It SHOULD work, but don’t hold me to that. I replaced a CV axle on my wife’s automatic FWD 1993 1.8L Impreza and it was the same procedure.

Kao Vue says:

would this work on a 97′ Subaru Impreza 1.8 AWD? i got a Left Front Outer Boot ripped

taza11659 says:

Yeah the setup is exactly the same on my 2001 Forester. Will try disconnecting the strut. Thanks for the walk through.

MercedesDieselGuy says:

Assuming it’s the same setup on a Forester, it’s not necessary to disconnect ball joint. The upper strut bolt adjusts camber and needs to be put back in the same place in order to preserve alignment. Mark it with some paint. Once you have that bolt out, and see it with your own eyes, it’ll make sense.

Thanks for this mate, I have spend all day trying to replace a CV boot on my forester and this has helped me heaps. Only problem is I don’t completely understand with the upper strut bolt? How do you mean that has to go back in the correct place, isnt it a tight fit though the holes in the stut? Also did you have to disconnect the ball joint?
