Saturn L Series Rear Bushings Repair

Saturn L Series Rear Bushings Repair

Replacing rear bushings on a Saturn L Series.
If you hear clunks and bangs coming from the rear of your L Series, it could be these bushings are worn out.
It isn’t a fun job to replace them, but should reduce rear tire wear, handle better, and get rid of the noises.

Where’d you get the larger single inner bushing? Part #?

william raleigh says:

Where were you able to find your trailing arm bushing the one that goes up into the frame I cannot find it at any parts store or online

Chas S says:

ChargerMiles007: Where did you get the rear trailing arm bushing and what was the cost ? They don't show that bushing at any parts stores here or on RockAuto here in the US. I also went to the Saturn Forums and they show $41 each from a OME parts store. Ah, a little too pricey in my thoughts.

Hi chargermiles007. I came across your great video on your L series seat repair. I looked more into your channel and found this great video as well. I own the same car but the L300 model. My rear end is shot like yours was. I'm hoping that we live close and I'm asking for your help.we can work out some sort of financial arrangement that's to your liking .that would help me out greatly. Please let me know.

Hi ChargerMiles007
I have a 02 L Series Lw200, My rear bushings are junk, I actually have to do this exact same job, I've been looking around for Bushings for the L-series or the Saab 9-5 and can't seem to find any, I've even looked for aftermarket Polyurethane Bushings but can't find any. I'm also in Canada, Ontario. Where did you get your bushings from? How much for those bushings 3 – per rear side, 1 big one in the frame + 2 at the hub, top &bottom.

Chas S says:

Mine has the same issue with the bushings and muffler. I was quoted $475 for the muffler, not including labor ! Ha, no chance. I went to the yard's and found at least 8 Saturn's that had rusted mufflers until I finally found one about a month later that wasn't rusted on an L300. Cut it off with a hacksaw, $17 ! I had to rig it to work but it does the job. The bushings I'll save for a while later.

I just went through rebuilding the rear suspension on my '99 SAAB 9-5 wagon, which uses the same rear suspension design as the L series. There's kits for removing those 'rose' bushes on the wheel hubs for ~$40 on fleabay (look for "opel/vauxhall bush removal tool"), and you can cure the horrible camber problems with an adjustable lower cross stay (part number SPC 67270). My car also suffered from sagging springs because the 9-5 wagons have really heavy asses and the stock springs can't handle it, so I had to install uprated springs (Lesjofors 4277815).

Oh, and you should be able to swap the disc rear brakes from any 1998-2009 SAAB 9-5 onto your car with little difficulty. The hub bolt spacing is identical afaik. 🙂
